Forums - Gaming - Game development costs: Reggie says...

"Your post is such an incredible combination of parroting things you've read before mixed with flat-out blind idiocy that it makes me dissapointed that my printer cannot print onto toilet paper, so that I could wipe my ass with it."

His grammar just isn't very good. Other than that, there was nothing wrong with his post.

No way Ninjabread man cost 5 million even with marketing. Some guy probably programed that in his basement over the course of a month. And what about Chicken Shoot. I think 5 to 10 million is the average.

Wii games cost a little more. Developing a game for Wii might cost $5 million to $10 million, including all of the marketing costs.

By contrast, developing a game for the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 can cost $20 million to $50 million, Fils-Aime asserted. As a result, a developer needs to sell 1.3 million to 1.5 million copies of a game to turn a profit, he argued.

I think some people are missing the fact that he is using words like "might" and "can" instead of absolutes.

Of course he's not dealing with absolutes.  The absolute range of cost for making a game would be between zero dollars and infinity but that doesn't tell us much.  More realistically, if you really really wanted to I'm sure you could make a PS360 game for less than $1million.  On the flip side I'm sure you could blow through a couple hundred mil making a Wii game if a company so desired.  Anything is of course possible so I think in this case he's giving us something like a confidence range for serious games.  That is most but not all non-shovelware games made for those systems will fall into the ranges Reggie gave.  Much more useful but certainly not absolute which is why absolutes weren't used.

You must be talking about Duke Nukem Forever, whose budget will climb to infinite simply on the grounds it'll be in development for the same ammount of time. =P

The wii is old tech, it is a super charged Gamecube, the cost of making an average game is going to be cheaper then PS3/360. But it only cost 26mil USD to make a 360/PS3 game, this was said by a major game developer. Porting it to the PC is also very cheap. Reggie is just upset that no one is making major games for the weak system that is the wii.

Nintendo is also keeping all the Disc's for Nintendo made games and limiting them for third parties, this has been said by more then one developer. Nintendo is also not liked by many companies that make games.

Everything i said is the truth, if you can name one thing i said that is incorrect then post about it.

The wii is a supercharged GC, the wii is based on GC tech and blown up. This was Nintendo's plan to keep games cheap and easy to make. Nintendo is also having a hard time making enough Disc's and they said they would place the disc's on games that sell the most, and thats Nintendo made games. I'm also pretty sure it was ubisoft that said it cost 24.6-26mil USD to make a 360/PS3 game.

The wii is also not getting all the big games, Assasains creed and CoD4 are not on the wii, along with many other games.

Well, first off you use the words of one developer to prove that games for thexbox/ps3 cost only 26 million $ to make, that's not very empirical data is it? For all we know the other could have said that the number is 15 m$ or 39 m$, so what's your point? Also what the hell do the big games not coming to the Wii have abything to do with this? Even if they came, the dev costs would still be lower so your point doesn't make any sense. The next thing is your claim that 3rd party devs don't like Nintendo because of a problem with disc production. You follow up with an idiotic statement that those discs are saved for the best selling games (nintendo games).  Well boo-effing-hoo, whose fault is it that Nintendo games sell better than 3rd party games? I'll tell you what, it sure as hell isn't Nintendos and any "but's" in this matter are simply out of the question. Nothing can stop developers from making good games except for themselves and that's the cold hard truth. One last thing, quit it with the "no major games coming to Wii". It makes you look stupid. We'll talk about this more when PS3 software sales top Nintendo software sales, okay?

Your post is halfway off topic and just flat out trolling. Seriously if somebody said things half as inflammatory about the PS3 as what you just said about the Wii there would be approximately 50 Sony fans in here complaining about how PS3 trolling is allowed.

Things in your post that are not necessary:

" The wii is old tech, it is a super charged Gamecube"

"Reggie is just upset that no one is making major games for the weak system that is the wii."

If you had just removed those two sentences you wouldn't be trolling this topic, as it stands you are.

Also can you post some sources for your last paragraph? Last time I heard that third parties actively disliked Ninty was in the SNES era when Ninty was treating them like shit. As for the disks thing I heard one developer complain that there was a shortage, can you get some sources that indicate more than one developer complained?

The super charged Gamecube comment is completely asinine. If something is roughly 2X as powerful is it really something to be riddiculed?

The developer he is quoting is Midway. Who used to lack of game discs as an excuse for their lack of Wii titles. I mean everyone here has seen what Cruis'n looks like. As far as I can recall that was the only game Midway announced for Wii since MK: Armageddon's release. I would be more inclined to by Midways story if they announced a half a dozen Wii titles but had to delay most of them at the last minute. Lack of game disc can't restrict sales of games that aren't in development. Some people lack the ability to read in between the lines.

It seems that the Reginator isn't alone in his opinion: http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7839&Itemid=2

"CFO Alain Martinez added that DS games, with their relatively low development costs, achieve profitability at around 100,000 units sold, while a next-gen game for PS3 or Xbox 360 needs to sell around 1.3 million."

You, sir, have won this thread.
