The story doesn't take any risks and shows only tiny hints at the darkness of the human nature.
It's a bit "refreshing" or at least not bog standard to portray the humans as aggressors/invaders, but to compensate for that they made a human the big hero + happy end to make it a movie "for everyone".

So in my opinion it's a 5/10 movie with fine 3D eye candy.

The thing is you don't see the humans as evil, you see the corporations, or the man, as evil.  In that sense, it's exactly like every other movie.  The fact that people rate it as high as they do for the 3D or say you should only watch it in 3D shows you how not-good of a movie it is.

That's because it wasn't trying to say humans are evil.  If a movie is supposed to be condemning colonialism, it doesn't make much sense to condem humans as a whole, does it?  Also, why do people refuse to consider that 3D might add something to the movie beyond the prettiness?

The 3D can absolutely make a movie better, I'm not saying it can't, what I'm saying the 3D and visual effects in general are the only reasons to see Avatar.  Beyond that it's a pretty blah that has been done 100 times over.

Beyond the visual effects it brings nothing to movies and I'm not saying movies in general always have to be excellent, but if you're calling the your movie the greatest movie of all time, it better be more than just eye candy.

Well too bad for you. I loved it a lot. Sure the story is quite Pocahontas-like, but the difference is that the world is magical, you just get sucked into it. After seeing the movie at the cinema, in 3D, I already wanted to see it again, because Pandora is just so amazing.

We got the movie about a week ago, and without the 3D it looses some of its magic but I still enjoyed it. I don't get why people are so picky. Personally, I chose to enjoy things instead of acting like a spoiled child, but that's just me.

Well imo dark stories are better. I want my stories to have shades of black and dark grey, sadly those aren't a dime a dozen. That is why I wasn't the biggest fan. I did enjoy the movie in 3D though. It's the same way I enjoy Crysis, sure it's not the best game ever, but it is nice to look at.

Look at it this way-- I love movies like Demolition Man.  It's a terrible movie but I really enjoy watching it.  Does that make it the greatest movie of all time?  Hell no.  Is it alright to like it?  Hell yes.

Avatar isn't a horrible movie and there's nothing wrong with really liking it, but it's far from the greatest movie of all time or even the year.  You may call it me being a spoiled child, I call it tired of people trying to shove down my throat how great Avatar is or how inspiring it was.

I don't even care that the movie is a copy of a copy of a copy of a movie, that doesn't matter.  Originality is overrated.  I'm mainly annoyed by people trying to convince me that 1) it's the greatest movie of all time, or at least one of the best and 2) looking down on my because I wasn't sucked into the world and moved by the message.

What can I say, I like bad movies that know they're bad, like Demolition Man.

Well you may be tired of people trying to shove it down your throat but I'm personally tired on how snobbish people on the internet act, especially fanboys. It's the better than thou attitude that gets to me and if you like popular stuff, you're treated like a moron or someone who doesn't have "taste".

I'm not saying you HAVE to love it, I just don't understand what's so *BAD* about it. The OP said it was bad and a waste of money.

Well I can't commit on people buying good or bad movies since I use to make a habit of raiding the $5 DVD bin when I use to buy DVD's all the time.

And I'm not really trying to say the movie is bad, just not good.

@ lolita )

I don't know if that's me being snobbish, but I really like it if there's sth. to think about in movies and if there isn't a clear black and white picture, but a chance to sympathize with everyone. I enjoyed Avatar, because I knew what to expect and I didn't try to think hard about it when watching it and that's what 5/10 means to me.
The movie isn't bad at all, but it's just very predictable, so I can understand people, that weren't immersed in the world at all, feeling like they wasted their money on sth. they already saw before. To me it wasn't a waste of money in any way.

Oh, I'd agree it's not the best movie of all time, but I don't think it's just eye candy either.  Yes, this story has been done a thousand times, but, really, so has every other story ever.  What's important is the storytelling and the nuances it introduces into the story itself.  I really don't want to get into a long drawn out argument, but I feel there are several things Avatar does very differently compared to most colonialism movies, and it leads to a far more powerful impact.
