Forums - Nintendo - What's up with Wii in Japan?

I am thinking about getting the black Wii when it is released this month. But, there is one thing that troubles me a bit about it.

I would like to be able to know that by the end of its lifespan, the Wii is going to have just as strong of a jrpg lineup as the PS1 and SNES did. However, right now it appears that the PS3 and even the 360 are getting more jrpg love than the Wii from Japanese developers. The Wii has sold almost twice as many consoles in Japan than the PS3, yet it appears from my vantage point that the PS3 is definitely having more jrpgs made for it than the Wii

The situation between Wii and PS3 right now in Japan actually reminds me of the situation that existed between NES and PC-Engine there. It appears that the PC Engine came out in Japan and started outselling the NES there. And that is what it looks like the PS3 is doing to Wii on a fairly regular basis in Japan these days. And, if this continues I don't know if the companies making big jrpgs for PS3 will suddenly drop their PS3 development and shift their development towards making large numbers of jrpgs for Wii.

So, do you think the Wii will catch up and pass 360 and PS3 in the number of big jrpgs that it will have and do you think it will be remembered for its outstanding number of jrpgs like the Super Nintendo, PS1, and PS2 are?

I don't believe the wii will ever have as many JRPGs as PS/PS2/SNES had, nor do I believe that devs will start making huge Rpg franchises exclusive to wii because of the western market..

The PS3/360 combined have a larger install base than the wii, so they make there JRPGs for both platforms. Final fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Star ocean the last hope, Nier, Last Remnant, Final Fantasy XIV all have/are releasing on the Playstation 3/Xbox 360 and those are some pretty huge RPG..

on the contrary, Dragon quest X is coming to Wii.

But as it looks right now, I think the PS3 is getting more JRPG support than wii in japan, even if you exclusve square enix.

Its too late to turn back. With that being said. Wii has lacked system sellers. It hasn't had anything since NSMBW. (All that did was hold it until Q2 2010)

Also japannesse delvopers can't make much profit on consoles anymore because of high costs and also the fact that lots of games only do well or stay in Japan. Japan is a small country. So they migrated to handhelds to stay afloat. It'll work for only 2 generations. Than we got many people betting on the wrong horse with PS3 back at the start of the generation. All that hurts the wii. Also DS reach stagnation point over there. PSP is neck to neck with it over there

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true. 2nd UPDATE: I have no Switch 2. I am now behind

The Wii will probably have 10 JRPGs by the end of its lifetime (I don't know how many are out now) and I only see one more that we don't know about coming.

Japanese devs supported the PS3 and 360 mostly with the JRPGs, to mixed success. The other smaller companies devoted themselves completely to the DS and PSP handhelds, leaving the Wii right in the middle with pretty much nothing. When it comes to New IPs on consoles this gen, Japan rarely made an impact.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

Wait for The Last Story.

But yeah, apart NSMBW, I don't know why they stick to the PS3 (it's totally stupid, 2x smaller userbase and astronomical development costs)

If you want JRPGs, get a handheld. That's where the target market is and the dev costs are low enough. The DS would generally be a better choice for this than the PSP.

I'd say that the biggest mystery this gen has been the complete refusal of Japanese dev's to make games for the Wii. Given the userbase, the sales of the few major third party releases that came out and the incredible success of the DS, I just can't explain it.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

If you want JRPG's, get a DS.

But the Wii has plenty of JRPG's coming out: Xenoblade, The Last Story, Tales of Grace, etc.

Everybody secretly hating Nintendo and their money printing machines.
I hate Nintendo, too, for not giving some of that monies.

I dunno right now there's only 3 JRPG's I want, The Last Story, Xenoblade, and FFv13, Dragon Quest X

3/4 are on wii.
but you probably have different tastes (I have all 3consoles)
