Forums - Sales - Winning the console war?

Okay.... this discussion will be about the console wars ps1 saturn onwards. Microsoft entered with the original Xbox. Why? Does anyone have any info on how big the potential is for winning a console war? I have heard many times that if Sony kept winning the console wars then they would be reaching insanely powerful company levels. Is this true were they one day going to be a threat to Microsoft, perhaps getting into competion with them? Sony hands down were declared the peoples choice with the ps2. So how much did they make? i seem to recall Phil Harrison taling at E3 (or some other event) about the success that the ps2 had been financially. I remember hearing the word billions. Although we are now in the next cycle of consoles I constantly hear "PS3 is loosing to much money Sony is doomed" etc. How do people know how much sony are losing with each console sold? Guessing? Sorry if any of this is a bit jumbled, struggling to get this across, I have been working for 9 hours lol. Just basically the money Sony from the ps1 and 2 dwarfed the competition and should be noted that they are NOT in trouble. Just because they lower the price dowesnt mean they are doing worse after all with a price drop comes greater income of sales. Also figures of what Harrison said of the PS2 financially would be welcome. Of course this will stay civilised, no Microsft r better than Sony wierd stuff.

You do realize Sony and every other company publishes a financial report every quarter. That's how we know Sony is losing money and how much.

People have too much "conspiracy theory" type stuff as to why Microsoft entered gamming. Ask anyone on Walstreet what the word on Microsoft was in 1999. They were saying that they were "saturated". No longer a "stock growth" that they used to be. Microsoft needed to be involved in other markets so that they could expand. They looked around at markets where companies had "near monopolies" and decided to compete in it. gaming against Sony and MP3 players against Apple.

If you win the console war you get a BRAND NEEEEEEW CAAAAAAAAAAAR!

Yes of course I know they have financial reports but it doesnt say how much they are losing for each console does it. jees why does evryone on this site get so frantic and instantly takes sides with something (anything). Patraonising comments are just not needed we are'nt children defending our toy makers lol

Sorry, but it's difficult at best to even read your rambling.

And yet your initial post....and subsequent rebuttal of FishyJoe's statement seems to beg otherwise.

Do yourself a favor...stay calm.  Wait for a thread to develop.  Let someone else do your arguing for you.  And always, always, reread your post before you send it.

i believe i remember something about Sony making $2 billion with the Playstation 2 brand, which, for the number of consoles sold, and the number of games sold is not that much (Nintendo will have probably made $2 billion with Wii brand in about a years time)

it is possible that the $2 billion might have only referred to something specific like Sony hardware + Sony software (ie not including 3rd party licencing fees/any fees for 3rd party perephrials) but i am not too sure.

I think it was also estimated Sony spent $2 billion on research and development etc (everything spent before it lauched) on the PS3.

basically Sony are still making good profit on PS2, a small profit from PSP (miniscule from hardware and small from software) but are making such losses with the PS3 as to cancel it all out.
last quarter i think the Playstation division of Sony lost about the same amount of money Nintendo made....i will try to find the financials.

There is a reason Nintendo passed Sony as one of the largest Japanese companies (this includes all of Sony not just gaming) a while back, and now has twice the market capitalisation that Sony has (i have no idea what that means but it generally shows a companies worth)

And about the losses per PS3 console: People have just made estimates based on component values to figure out how much Sony loses per PS3, but those estimates usually don't include marketing/advertising, pack-in games (motorstorm/resistance) nor packaging or shipping costs....and probably not any taxes they have to pay in various regions (mainly PAL)

fishy that wasn't needed, he structured his sentences well enough, just didn't do what is actually bad English but none the less commonplace for forums, which is to...

make a new paragraph for everything.

Big money big money big money!

NO WHAMMY STOP!

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.
