Forums - Sales - Microsoft is eerie silent these few weeks :0 I wonder why :0

Xbox is spent. Cutting the price 50 wont do much. Cutting the price $100 puts gaming division at a loss again. Im sure Microsoft is fine with last place if they make money/ sell games.

@davygee

I don't think the 8 month comparison is valid. Xbox 360 was treading unknown waters back when it was released as it was the only current gen console back then. PS3 was set to benefit from launching a little later from this stand point.

This is the reason why from this chart,
http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php
even though the PS3 and the Xbox 360 have similar curves, the PS3 is doing bad compared to the 360.

But yep, as the PS3 has just one holiday season, it's set to sell more. Whereas this is the 2nd for 360, it set to sell less because people who wanted to buy one for the holidays have already bought one last season.

I dont think MS is spent, they might just be letting some steam cool off. They might be busy preparing next years line up. Who knows?

i don't think that MS needs a price drop right now: on WW weekly basis it's still on par with ps3 (10k more or less is not significative) and i think that this situation is gonna remain the same during this holiday season...and the gap is still of about 7 millions console (actually more than what PS3 has been able to sell till now).

If you ask me i think that X360 will be in need of a price drop the price only AFTER this holiday season (i imagine right before the launch of GTA4)

As for "disappointing Mass effect sales" i think you should consider that in most EU ME went on sale on the 23rd...and at least before considering Mass effect a flop i'd wait for US numbers: i bet that 2 millions WW LTD is still at reach/possible (not bad for a new IP, is it?).

@Jandre02

Cutting the price 50 right now wont do much. But at the right time, this could mean big for MS. That puts the Elite at 399 easily comparable to PS3's 40Gb which is PS3's cheapest SKU.

On the other side, MS needs to make a good game lineup for next year. AFAIK, not much is set for next year. Fable 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, SC: conviction and no more. Whereas on the Sony camp, MGS4, KZ2, FFXIII.l

....Could it be because Microsoft PR doesn't follow VGC data every week? The PS3 beats the X360 for 2 weeks by under 10k, and everyone goes apecrap.

Kcua - you don't follow X360 much, do you? MS has a great lineup next year. Banjo Kazooie 3, Fable 2, NG2, SC: Conviction, Left 4 Dead, Kingdom Under Fire, the GTA Exclusive content, Infinite Undiscovery, Cry-On, off the top of my head.

Lets wait a few weeks to see how the PS3 price drop does. Everyone forgets they just dropped the price, right? In a month or two, what if that price drop returns the PS3 to abysmal-level sales? Even at this point, are sales worth it with the huge loss that Sony has to be taking at $400 USD per system? Time will tell.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

There is precious little MS can do other than sit idly by while the competition respectively leaves them in the dust and catches up slowly but certainly.
We knew all along that the 360 would never sell well in Japan, and that it would sell only mediocre in the EU, so no one should be surprised.
I know 2 people who have a 360 personally, one of them recently went bust when the RRoD came a' knockin...

 take out FFXIII from the list...and add Too Human to X360's and GT5 to PS3. having said that you're right: in the "heavyweight" list  Sony has an advantage...but still there's a gap of 7 millions consoles: you have to imagine PS3 selling 100k more than x360 on a WW weekly basis for 70 weeks...are those 3 big ip's enough? time will tell.

They're selling more than the PS3 worldwide, and it'll take more than a year to lose second place in Europe at this pace. They're also in a good position to cut prices, so they're doing pretty well if you ask me.

I think this is more a case of Sony PR making everyone else in the industry sound timid to the point of muteness. =P

  • 8 months after the 360 was released in Europe it had sold 1.28m
  • 8 months after the PS3 was released in Europe it had sold 1.98m

Also, take into consideration that the PS3 hasn't had an Xmas season yet, whereas the 360 did have one in it's first 8 months.  The PS3 has sold a whopping 700k more in the same time frame.

you do realise that the xbox 360 was sold out in Europe for  up to 4 months, ( i could only find an xbox 360 in march 2006)
