Forums - Sony - PS3 starting to take off in Europe/Others

As we have been seeing since the start of October, the PS3 has been outselling the 360 in Europe and Others.  Well last week, we are now seeing a significant margin of a difference.

In OR, the PS3 sold over 100k in the region whereas the 360 sold just under 70k.  In Europe, the difference is slightly larger.  The PS3 having sold 86k and the 360 on 53k.

Since the 1st October in the last 8 weeks, the PS3 has sold 688k units in Others while the 360 has sold 412k.

Also, in Europe the PS3 has only been on the market for 8 months (I'm not sure about the other areas included in the regions ie. Austrailia), but the PS3 has sold at least 300k more units in 8 months than the 360 did in the it's first 12 months.

I know the PS3 has been in for a fair amount of stick, and I think a fair amount of it is due i.e. price and lack of games, but one thing that does seem to be happening, now in Others and has been happening since day one in Japan is that the PS3 is certainly taking off and is consistently outselling it's main competitor the 360 by a decent margin.

So what does this mean?  Well the 360 has sold nearly double the PS3's in Others, but the momentum seems to be with the PS3 at the moment.  In Japan, the PS3 is consistently outselling the 360 hy a huge margin and the 360 is relegated to 3rd position there, but in NA, the 360 is still very strong and it seems like not wanting to slow down at all.  The PS3 will need to play some serious catch up to even have a chance of gaining any significant ground in NA, but t can be done.

Also, this means, that this Xmas is going to be a good battle overall.  The Wii is running away with everything at the moment, but the battle is now on for 2nd place over the holiday season and it may very well be a deciding moment in the Next Gen battle.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Agreed the PS3 has a good chance this christmas to outsell the XBox 360, US (and Dutch, my country) surveys also indicated that more people would rather have a PS3 underneath their christmas tree.

This is great for the PS3 considering the most anticipated PS3 games are yet to come and the most anticipated XBox 360 games are already on the market.

PS3 vs 360 sales

Europe has been always very Sonyish since PlayStation. At least it is Spain...

Although the PS3 is still on a high from it's price drop in Europe, I still think this weeks figures are very indicative of the overall attitude of the European market.

The 360 has just released it's biggest title (Halo 3) and a glut of other high quality games, and the system is also a full 50 euro cheaper then it's rival, and offers far better bundle deals, yet it's being outsold by a full 30k, by a system that has yet to deliver any of it's major franchises (with the exception of Ratchet).

You can argue all you want about how it's all just to do with a price cut. Yet the reality is, if you walk into a shop over here you'll see a PS3 for 399 euro with one game, and a 360 for 350 euro with 3 games. Yet the PS3 is outselling the 360.

December will be an interesting month to watch European sales.

Sonyish and Nintendoish ^^

well, I believe too and I predicted that in november the PS3 will sell better than the Xbox360 WW (and particularly in PAL) until the end of 2007 :

- more recent price cut/model compared to the xbox360
- Halo3/Bioshock have less effect
- finally some good games : AssassinCreed/CoD4/Unchartred !
(in PAL the game is not here but people are seriously waiting for)
- brandname, they prefer buy a PS

Note : I dont know if the 80gb is sold out or not (france).

2008 will be very interesting.

Limited BC, it still plays PS1 games which is crucial if you want to buy them from the PSN store. Also some good PSP games like Tekken 5: DR and WipeOut are redone in 1080p for the PS3 which may soften the pain.

Personally I am still very happy to own a PS3 with PS2 backwards compatibility considering I especially love the God of War games and my girlfriend love Ape Escape 2 and 3. (improved experience => upscales / filtered, wireless controll, no need for memory cards, etc).

True. I was reffering to the fact that most posters here claimed PS3 will drop totally right after 60 gb sku is out of stock. Buyers do prefer 60 gb sku over 40 gb but they will buy the second if first is unavailable. That was really brilliant move of Sony.  40 gb sku is cheaper to make and more affordable to buy. Great deal with 60 gb starterpack prevented stockpiling of this model. Everyone is happy.

Yes, that must have been mostly wishful thinking.

Although I do think PS2 backwards compatibility is a very useful feature, especially for someone like me who never owned a PS2 before and can now pick up all the greatest titles at budget prices. But entry price is more important from the big perspective, many already own a PS2 and the PS2 will get even cheaper next year and so you can have a PS2 in the kid's room and a PS3 in the living room at a similar price as a 60 / 80 GB PS3 at current prices.
