Forums - Gaming - Will 3d on consoles take off or will it be a gimmick?

Hi to all i was just wondering about 3D on consoles,do you guys think it will be well supported or will it be just a gimmick with some bits of 3D put into the game at certain points? Is it neccesary at this point in the consoles life?or maybe they should wait til the next gen when it will be better supported from the get go.what do you think?

We should wait till next gen, but don't we need to buy 3D tv's to get 3d?

It won't be anything huge, but I'm glad that developers are getting their hands on the technology now, as well as Sony gearing up for it, which hopefully means the PS4 will be very good at supporting 3D.

If Nintendo get there first it will be claimed a gimmick.

Any other outcome or if others follow it will be claimed to be amazing and the next great thing in gaming.

edit

...oh sorry you said 3D and not 'motion control'.

Well sony could have waited with blu ray until next generation. It was called a failure but it paid off in the end and the end is still far away. I think that 3D will be more about films and TV rather then games but Im happy either way. If they play thier cards right 3D may take off well.

great post rainbird, yes i am sure also that sony will be well prepared for the next gen with p4 as microsoft will be also as they would not want to be the one again with the tech that does not feature the latest bells and whistles.no bluray in the 360 is one of the things that is a feature that the 360 could have had.

I don't think it will reach Wii like success or anything, but console 3D should get a core of its followers.

Like others have said, next gen console 3D may come in to its own with more powerful systems, surround display outputs, true head tracking...etc

It will be a gimick until 3D TV's become mainstream (as in a decent market penetration like 30% or more) and has little to do with console generation boundaries. I mean, games are already 3D, but rendered in 2D, so going to 3D is just a natural extension. However, it is limited by the TV, so for now PS3 having 3D capabilities is a complete waste on 99% of the market. I'm glad they are exploring it now, but if a company doesn't have money to burn then I hope they don't bother with it as it won't gain them any sales.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

I agree with the first half but the second half not so much.  Sony wants to sell you a 3D tv and eventually some 3D blu-rays but if there is no content then no one will buy the tv.  now i don't think sony should put too much time/money into 3D at this time due to a tiny consumer market. However, getting video games to display in 3D is a much easier and quicker way to get 3D content into the market compared to movies which will need special cameras.  At the end of this year there will be what...10 blu-rays in 3D and that's probably being generous?  There is only 1 atm and I heard Avatar won't have a 3D release until next year.  Even if Sony just tacked on 3D in a crappy way with low rez/fps we could have 10-20 video games in 3D in the same time frame between patches for old games and support for this year's releases.

They are actually making individual developers implement the 3D for their titles and Sony isn't providing a universal 3d driver, so I doubt they are spending much on this 3D push.

The update on the PS3 is only there because PS3 lacks HDMI 1.4 hence the 3d instructions that are built in to HDMI 1.4 need to be passed along by the PS3, using software.

There are 3 companies out tehre which actually provide 3D drivers which allow for games to be changed to 3D on the fly without any extra work. Nvidia, Tridef and IZ3D. One of these guys need to implement and sell their drivers for a next gen console and then will there be a 3D boom people are expecting!
