Forums - Nintendo - A Few Questions about 3DS

I've heard (mayberumours?) that Nintendo will be releasing their new 3DS handheld later this year, and this has prompted me to wonder a few things about the new handheld.

1.) How much do you think Nintendo 3DS will cost on its release day?

2.) I really like the fact that DSI XL has large screens for a handheld. Do you think 3DS will keep the larger screens?

3.) Do yu think that some of the big DS games on the way like Okamiden and Golden Sun 3 will be further enhanced or optimized for 3DS? I think a game like Okamiden could take advantage of a 3d world.

4. Will 3DS be compatable will all previous DS games?

5. Do you expect connectivity between 3DS and Wii to be one of its features? I think connectivity was one of the best features of GC and GBA, and I'm not sure, but I think that kind of connectivity has been missing from the DS and Wii so far.

Around the Network

1) - 229.99$

2) - somewhere in between XL and DSi

3) no

4) yes

These are just wild guesses
1. In the $199.99 to $249.99 range
2. probably will have similar screen size to the DS Lite/DSi
3. I think some current DS games in development will probably be scratched and re developed to take advantage of the added power the 3DS offers.
4. I hope so.
5. Sure why not.

1. £150 - £180 <-- almost certainly closer to £150 however.
2. It won't be as big as XL, more like DSi/Lite
3. I doubt it
4. Almost certainly yes.
5. I think they'll make more of an effort to connect to the Wii

~~~~ Mario Kart 8 drove far past my expectations! Never again will I doubt the wheels of a Monster Franchise! :0 ~~~~
1) $150 (yes, I'm the odd man out, but the original DS launched at $149 six years ago)
2) I think they'll be the same size as the DSi
3) maybe but I doubt it, Nintendo may pull a GB/GBC even though they consider the 3DS a new console (unlike the DSi)
4) yes, it's been confirmed by Nintendo
5) Probably yes. For whatever reason Nintendo loves connectivity even if they don't really use it.
If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
1. $199 is my guess
2. 3.4 inches (similar to DSi)
3. Depends on how far along they are in the development.
4. Yes, both DS and DSi games
5. One problem with connecting the DS to the Wii is that it is dual screen whereas your TV isn't. The 3DS will be 3D, further complicating this connection.
1.) How much do you think Nintendo 3DS will cost on its release day? 200 or thereabouts. I think Nintendo's seen Sony's mistake in PSPGo pricing at the very least which would dissuade them from pushing beyond that
2.) I really like the fact that DSI XL has large screens for a handheld. Do you think 3DS will keep the larger screens? Not that large, no.
3.) Do yu think that some of the big DS games on the way like Okamiden and Golden Sun 3 will be further enhanced or optimized for 3DS? I think a game like Okamiden could take advantage of a 3d world. Doubtlessly some of them will, but not all. I would question Golden Sun 3 even coming for DS at this point, but who knows.
4. Will 3DS be compatable will all previous DS games? Wouldn't see why not. At least in the launch models, Nintendo's never gone without at least 1 generation of backwards compatibility in a handeld.
5. Do you expect connectivity between 3DS and Wii to be one of its features? I think connectivity was one of the best features of GC and GBA, and I'm not sure, but I think that kind of connectivity has been missing from the DS and Wii so far. Doubt it. That'll be the N6's job.
Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
I hope it doesn't costs 200$ and nowhere near it.
180$ would be the the maximum for a portable gaming machine.
1) About $30 more than the DSi. Though I think the DSi will get a price drop. It now needs an extra GPU and special screens. So it might launch at the current DSi price.
2) No. It seems to be a brain block to most people, but the DSiXL is actually for people with visual impairment(ie seniors). It's still a fine machine, but it's very unlikely that 3d will go over well with seniors.
3) Could be better, but likely won't happen. Development has already started on these games. Switching to new tech late or mid development usually comes at a cost of being good and sales.
4) Likely. It's still mostly NDS architecture.
5) There is no lack of connectivity between DS and Wii already. It's just no one is all that interested. Much like no one really uses the PSP as a steering wheel and rear view mirror in of the PS3 driving games. Cool concept, but don't seem to take off.
Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.
1. I think Nintendo is going to start by pricing the 3DS high ($200+). Even after inflation, that is an unusually high price for a Nintendo handheld launch. But Nintendo can pull it off with an inter-generational strategy. The DS Lite will be marketed towards the laggards (haven't bought a DS before and they want something dirt cheap). The DSi and DSi XL to late adopters (haven't bought a DS before and don't wanna pay a fortune for a handheld). And the 3DS will be marketed towards early adopters. The early and late majorities (current DS owners who don't wanna pay $200 for a 3DS or want to wait for the library to grow) will stick with their DS for awhile.
After the DS Lite and DSi start to really fade, then Nintendo will lower the price of the 3DS (by then, the technology will be cheaper. So they can afford to do so) and market it towards the majority.
2. 3DS won't be any/much bigger than DSi in my opinion. Portability is a crucial factor. If you can't fit it in your pocket, it will never take off. People don't want to have to carry a bag with them. There is a market for super sized handhelds (DSi XL sales prove that). But most gamers are going to want something they can fit in their pocket.
I don't have anything new to add to 3-5.
