It will be a glorious day when the PS3 fans can celebrate being tied for last place instead of owning it all by themselves.

Channel = number on store shelves + number in trucks/on boats on the way to shelves. Less stock on shelves means less difference between shipped and sold. Units that have been ordered but not have not left factories do not count as shipped |
For Sony they do, Sony do not report shipped as I said they report ordered. Hence how they can seem to have a large number of consoles in the channel but have shortages, what they say is shipped isn't shipped it's simply ordered by retailers

No SONY report console sold+shipped to retailers, the same as Microsoft and Nintendo. SONY used to report manufactured + ordered but changed this in 2007...

Sony don't report shipped, Sony report ordered meaning the shortages shouldn't affect their figures in fact the shortages would mean they'd have a higher number of consoles in the "channel" because some of them haven't been made yet just ordered |
As of April 1, 2007, Sony began using the industry wide method of reporting units sold to retailers/distributors.
Prior to that date, they reported units manufactured.
