And once again both camps are taking things way too seriously. Ebert's "too old", "out of touch", and "slipped out of relevancy" while gamers are "illiterate" and "stupid". Glad we've made it this far, can't wait to see where it takes us from here.

I expect this out of gaming journalism.

I do not so much expect it from a man who's been the premier cinema critic in this country for like three decades

Good grief why people keep asking him about games??? Is like asking Disney about hentai.

This aregument has happened before, back when photographic camera's came into the scene, many artist rejected the idea that photo's could be art, because to them it was the machine that took the picture while the 'Artist' just pressed a button...after many years photography was eventually accepted as an art form.

The same thing is happening here, although it's more of an interative art if nothing else, an art that has an entertainment value to it, something that normal art simply doesn't have.

I'm outraged!!!

Why the hell is Mr. slippy toes, no neck insulting gamers and acting all elitist? Unprofessional.

I'm going to destroy him the only way I know how!!! (Marches off to Wikipedia)

I used to have respect for him. But I think I just lost it. Seriously he is now being a dink about it. Seriously play games like Uncharted 2, Gears of War 2, Final Fantasy XIII, Mass Effect 2, and then tell me that video games aren't art.

Seems to me that this guy is afraid of change.

And yet it's still not right, for either party. I'll just leave it at that.

I think he's talking about stories in video games, and I tend to agree. Anyone who's read a half decent piece of literature can recognize that story telling in video games is shit. The creator of a video game gives up lots of control over what he can do with a video game for the sake of interactivity. I don't think we'll ever be able to see a video game with a truly great story. In order to tell that story, the player's going to have to give up practically all his control over what happens in the game, and then it's not hardly a game at all anymore. Plus, no the writers of the stories for video games are hardly world class. I cringed when I read IGN's review of GTAIV and had to deal with their gushing over the "amazing writing."

The problem with video games being art (art in the same sense a painting, movie, or piece of literature is art, NOT the way driving car is an art) is that there is always something that takes priority over expression: fun. Games have one main goal in mind: for them to be FUN to PLAY. Change the main priority of a game and it's no longer a game. As long as expression takes a back seat to fun (read: as long as video games remain games), they will never be art in that sense.

If video games aren't considered art, then I suppose movies can't be either.

A man who doesn't like videogames. It's difficult to talk about something that you don't like, I guess people is really overacting this a lot, I've seen 4 different editorials from gaming sites about this, and they tried really hard to look intelectual and serious........ but then I remember that some days ago they're sparking flamw warz over the Internetz so that actaully took some of the credits from those articles.
