Forums - General - Thread of 'Iceland causes rest of Europe problems'

This is pretty serious. I'm surprised no one else posted about this...

A volcano in Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull has caused major air traffic problems in Europe. So much so, most travel has been grounded in the northern countries. Its expected to decend into lower France and Italy soon, damaging their traffic as well.

The big problem with this is the length of how long this may continue. The last time this volcano erupted, it lasted for roughly 2 years. Although I doubt that air travel would be hampered for so long under such an eruption, there may be economic damage to Europe if it persists too long, I'd imagine.

Feel free to discuss this thread about how horrible Iceland is due to this. Europe has my sympathies for this, as there are lots of stranded travelers in New York waiting to get back to Europe. If they stay too long, they may gain too much weight and not fit onto the aircraft

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

thank goodness the wind is blowing towards Europe, wouldn't want an ash cloud over Canada during the NHL playoffs, their would probably be war.

I thought it had stopped it's eruption already.

Eyja isn't even the biggest issue here IMO.

Eyjafjallajökull has another volcano nearby, Katla, that's not only a larger volcano system, but a lot more active AND for the last three times Eyja has erupted, Katja has erupted quickly afterwars. With a little crappy luck and Sod's Law, we might be getting two eruptions in a row, with not only a lot bigger ash coverage, but Iceland will also get massive floods as well.

@Slimebeast: It's still erupting I think:

"There's absolutely no sign that the thing is calming down. On the contrary, we can see that at this moment it's extraordinarily active," he said.

There may be economic damage to Europe and even outside Europe.

For example, European tourists are not going anywhere now. Countries like Thailand will surely be affected if this stays on for a few weeks.

It's not just Europe either, the F1 commentators in Australia just mentioned that the next Moto GP (motorbikes) in Japan may be cancelled due to the Icelandic eruption. The whole world is being screwed over by the eruption and not only is it not slowing, but there is a huge volcano next to this one that always gets set off by the one going off now.

It's not good at all guys..

Huh, saw this in the news. Didn't realize it was that serious.

Clearly god is punishing you for being communists.

Also that was clearly a joke. I don't need a repeat of when montanto warned me about joking that Switzerlands economic crisis was karma for taking all that Nazi gold.

It's kind of serious because it's getting to the point that no one believes it anymore when they say "tomorrow there will be flights".

No one knows when the eruption stops, and after that no one knows how many days it takes for the wind to scatter the ash enough.

Hear in NZ all the news anchors are saying 'the volcano in Iceland' rather than try and pronounce that name.

I guess we should of been investing more in boats? I don't know. It's kinda crazy when something like this happens. Imagine what would happen if some kind of anomoly made it so cellphones don't work anymore. Wasn't one of the effects of climate change supposed to effect flight routes? Or am i thinking of shipping routes?
