Slavery doesnt have to end when the war ended to consider it the issue that cause the war. The result of the war can happen within a relevant time after the war. Put it this way, the civil war effectively (within a relevant time period) ended slavery. Like i said before, it all depends on ones perspective.
Personally, I think that southerners tried to hide behind 'state rights' to protect their slavery interests (which is predominantly economic).
