Forums - Sony - 40 GB PS3 will be the only PS3 model available worldwide

Wouldn't it make sense for Sony to just rerelease PS2 games via the Playstation Store so that people can play PS2 games on their 40 GB PS3 is they really want to? It's not like the Wii where the lack of a harddrive prevents the purchase/dl of such large game files.

To do that they would need to create a working emulator for PS2 games, meaning it would be backwards compatible with disk games to begin with.

They say they have no plans for anything like that. I just hope to hell they'll change their mind, or, more likely, they're lying.

It's a lot harder to emulate the GS than the EE. The costs of doing so may exceed the cost of just including the GS in the first place. That's why they won't promise any BC in the future with the 40gb.

Maybe they meant that the forty gig would be the only one that every territory has in COMMON as the PAL has the starter packs, and the 20 and 60 gigs are still available in japan.

I think I'm the only person here who thinks this is an AWESOME descision if true. Theres far too many PS2 titles in the world and SONY WONT give them up. IF this were true, it would mean one of two things, 1.) That ps2 emulation is closer than we thought (40 gig plays all ps1 games right?), OR that they'll be pushing PS1 and 2 titles over PSN, which would be a HUGE deal for me :D

It's already like that in Australia...

And in Europe too (basically PAL territories I suppose). The thing is, people were assuming (and quite emphatically I may add) that they were going to introduce a 80/120/whatever GB model with BC later. If this guy is right (which is not a given, since he's from SCEE), that's not goint to happen, which I guess will be a shock to many people.

On the main topic, I seriously doubt that they're actually going to phase out the high-end models. Not because it would piss off millions of consumers, as I don't think that would stop them, but because the expensive models have a better profit margin for them. I don't know how much cheaper the 40 gig is to manufacture, but it certainly isn't the $100 we see on the retail price tag. Sales of the 80 gig subsidize the cheaper model.

"When you say "features" the key elements that are missing is going to be an element of hard drive, but that has come about because of the research that we've done as to what is the required amount that is used at this stage; the type of user that is using a PS3. And then yes, the ports have been taken out so there are only two USB ports, and then of course the memory stick ports have been taken out."

I also think it's hilarious that he completely ignores the one missing feature anyone actually cares about, backwards compatibility. There's "being careful what you say" and then there's "denying the elephant sitting on your lap." I don't think you're fooling anyone with the latter.

I would say you are in denial, and they DO want to give up the PS2 titles and are using the GS as an excuse. (It wasn't supposed to cost more then 50 dollars.)

They don't want people buying PS2 games because they've already made their money off them... and instead want PS3's floundering software to sell higher numbers and their PSN store to sell the "budget priced" games.  (Note: Software sales arn't that horrible attach rate wise, but attach rate doesn't help the cauffers.)

PS1 games might go over then PSN.  It's been a while since you could find them anywhere, even stores that sell used games don't carry them.

PS2 games couldn't without a software solution... which would just allow people to play PS2 games off their discs.
