Forums - Sony - PS3 Custom Firmware 3.21OO Release Imminent

Geohot did not hack the PS3 for piracy, stop spreading FUD please.  Other OS in standard form is still restricted access, the ability to have full access to all the SPE's and the GPU would open up some interesting possibilities from a emulation/mediaplayer point of view.  Not everything is about piracy in the hacking world, although there is a possibility that it would open a door for the pirates to launch their attacks on the system.

Whether this would have made piracy possible or not is irrelevant though it still doesn't change the fact Sony just dumped over millions of consumers rights and you people are still claiming thats a good thing.  How about you stop telling everyone else that they shouldn't be concerned about protecting their rights and just let these threads die.

Its nausicating, how little people know about the PS3 technically. All usable SPEs were already fully opened up since launch. To improve production yield, they disabled one(with efuses), and they reserved one for the OS (THIS WILL NOT CHANGE REGARDLESS IF YOU HACK THE PS3 OR NOT). Through a bug in FW 2.4 or something, people had 70% of the GPU access, and nothing was substainatally made. Emualators for pre-psx (SNES, Genesis..etc) were already runnable.

I don't know what more 'interesting possibilities' you want aside from bootloaders and ability to play 'back ups'.

As for the otherOs.. Sony stopped supporting it many moons ago, the otherOS was hanging on the thread of "PS3 hasn't been hacked yet". Mr. GeoHot decided to cut the thread, hence otheros died.

Well alot of people that want full access to the GPU is for to run 3D stuff not just 2D stuff, as in PS1 emus, N64 emus hell even adding back in PS2 emulation (Another think sony took away)..

So saying everyone wanted it just for bootloaders etc is very one sided on your behalf..

And as for the people that said why would sony want to remove other OS from fats, maybe to stop people from running emus on it and playing games like Final Fight, Street Fighter 2 etc for free on emus instead of buying them from PSN...

Why do you need a PS1 emulator if the PS3 itself is PS1 backward compatible?

Here is PS3 running '3D' stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJQkXmG6UTI&feature=related

No other purpose really than for running downloaded/pirated ROMS.

I still don't buy the "so I can play back ups of my PS1 games on an emulator" excuse.

You do not have full access to the GPU, thats the end of your argument right there cheers.

If you don't like Other OS, thats fine but stop telling me I shouldn't be upset Sony have just taken away something I PAID for.  I don't care whatever excuses you say two wrong's don't make a right.  One day all you people supporting Sony doing this will be made to look fools when they remove something you actually need from the console and then they will have a past precident they can fall back on and say it's fine.

No you didnt PAY for OOS, PS3 would have been the same MSRP with or with out.  And depending on where you live it would have cost more with out it.  Think about it

random canadian-how did they not pay for a feature that was included when they bought their ps3? I think you should read the rest of the thread, you seem to have completely missed the point.

You seem to have missed my entire last post yet still felt the need to comment, here let me try again.

PS3 @ launch = 599

PS3 @ launch with no OSS support = 599

If it doesnt add to the price you didnt pay for it because it came FREE.  It also helped to reduce the cost of the machine in places that have tax breaks for consoles that can run a normal OS for regular computing purposes.

Since when were media PCs ONLY good for running emulators on (and with another OS installed, that's exactly what the PS3 doubles as)?

No, I definately paid for that feature.  It doesn't matter what difference the RRP may or may not have been, the feature was there when I bought it, I now have to decide if I want to play future games and PSN or retain that feature.  Think about it.

Lol k you win,  your right you paid for something that had no effect on the price.

Anyways so where is this 3.21OO CFW?  DYA expected Geo to make a CFW and then find an exploit in the XMB to execute unsigned code to allow R+RW access to the nand !!

I doubt anything like that is "imminent"
