I think they should call the social services and let them take the child away instead, because it's obvious that the mother isn't fit to take care of her kid. |
That's a bit extreme man, mistakes were made, but that's WAY too harsh.

Even if he didn't mean to hurt her like that, I'm not sure how much that changes things in the eyes of the law. |
I don't think that's the case though. I don't think a dog that bites someone because they are being abused are any more likely to bite a person not abusing them unless they are like abused near 24/7... espiecally a Labrador Rotweiler mix. Animals don't just randomly attack people.
Quite honestly, Labradors and Rottweilers are two of the chillest dog breeds out there from what I've read, the latter just gets a bad reputation due to well people pushing their dogs over the edge with extreme means, because they're basically gentle giants.
Both kinds of dogs are about as good with kids as your EVER going to get out of an animal... any animal.

I gotta say I love shio's attitude on this though (and Bambo's too).

I agree. That's why the dog would undergo evaluation: if he's not a danger (and he probably isn't) then he would be fine to come back and that'd be that.
They don't just kill dogs out of hand at Animal Control.
Of course, the family isn't doing this, so it's hard to know for sure at all.

Eh, Animal control can be quite lazy honestly, i've heard plenty of cases of dogs being put down just because... at least they HAVE an evaluation method though, unlike some other states.

To everyone saying that my sister is a bad dog owner, keep it in mind that the dog is not her's. The dog belongs to my mother and father.
New York State Law also states that now the dog will be labeled as a "Dangerous Animal" and if he unfortunately attacks again he will not only forced to be put down, but my parents would also get a $1,000 fine as well as 90-days in jail.
Food for thought in regards to those on the dog's side.
Also bear in mind that the dog has a habit of growling at not only my niece, but to my 10 year old cousin, my niece's 5 year old step brother and my 4 1/2 year old nephew.
Do we blame all of them too?
The dog is getting old and ever since his hernia surgery where he also had his testicles removed he has had a completely different personality. Sometimes he is a mush and sometimes he is a mean son of a bitch.
This could have been anyone's kid and not just my sister's.
While I do not deny that my sister is to blame for allowing my niece to hit the dog, the dog is still becoming quite an issue, especially in a home where my 9 1/2 month old daughter is living.
Plus, how do you teach a 2 year old to not walk over to a dog or pull it's tail, hair, etc...? Even my daughter now likes to grab the small dog by the hair. Remember, these are very little children who really do not know any better.

Just want to be clear: I'm not on the dog's side, and I think he should be evaluated by Animal Control. I don't think it's responsible to keep him around kids until he's evaluated, and I thinkn you're right in not letting your daughter near him.

My post is more aimed towards people like Shio.
What happened yesterday was incredibly unfortunate and people would be surprised at what kind of stuff a child can get his/herself into in the blink of an eye.
A big mistake was made yesterday and my sister is absolutely a wreck and is beating herself up about it, but even so, she is not a bad parent. She has a useless boyfriend who doesn't do much and she had to watch multiple children on her own and while tending quickly to my daughter, her daughter walked outside into the backyard with a dog who unknowingly was going to snap for the first time in his 10 year life.
This happened just as my girlfriend arrived home from school and walked in the door. She saw my niece open that door, which is directly in view of the front doorway when walking in. They both yelled for her to get back inside, but of course, she walked outside.
It is just hard for some people to understand the situation when they weren't here and only get to read a post on a forum.

Also, my niece is awake today and fully alert. Her cut on the side of her face is all stitched up and is a straight line up and down, it will shrink as she grows.
They also repaired the muscles in her eyelids and repaired her tear ducts. They say the doctor's did a wonderful job.
She will be home tomorrow.
She also reached for my sister's phone today and said "Junky", so she let her talk to me on the phone just an hour ago.
