Gamers not "supporting" a game they don't find appealing is never the fault of gamers. It's not gamers faults that Rune Factory Frontier didn't sell more - that's a problem with the game.

Ditto Ogre Battle.

Ditto Harvest Moon.

Ditto Earth Defense Force 2017.

Ditto Shadow of the Colossus, even.

If a game fails in the market, the blame lies on the developer or publisher. Simple as that. Whether the reason is lack of advertising of lack of mainstream appeal. It is their job to satisfy the consumer, not the other way around. The customer is always right.

depends

As you should be hearing from most people, it depends. Most of the time, its due to the company not advertising the game or not advertising it correctly.

There are rare exceptions when a game can release next to another major game and not sell well because of it, but even then, that's partially due to poor planning by the people who produced the game.

There's never really any times when 'fans' are to blame for a game not doing well. Its either they didn't hear about it or they didn't want it. People buy the game and if they don't buy it, there's a reason. Pure capitalism at its finest.

Bad planning and marketing, and not knowing your target demographics are what makes good games fail.

on what.

Well it all has to do with the consumers.

Who knew a game like Just Dance would be a hit?

Why is CoD selling in record numbers?

Sometimes shit games do great while great games go ignored. Its all a matter of what the consumers want.
