Forums - Sony - Uncharted 2 “the perfect example” of storytelling, says Crysis 2 writer

Halo? “Bullshit”. Modern Warfare 2? “An immense disappointment”. Uncharted 2? According to Crysis 2 writer Richard Morgan, it was “the perfect example” of storytelling in games.

“There is absolutely no reason why you can’t weld a really good narrative to a really cool shooting game,” Morgan told NowGamer.

“Uncharted 2 is the perfect example…it’s tongue-in-cheek, but it’s a compelling story and it’s a very straight-forward gameplay dynamic.

“Crysis 2, fine, it is fundamentally about firefights – about shooting stuff – but so was BioShock. The whole point about BioShock was the texture that made it.

Crysis 2 releases this Holiday season for PS3, 360 and PC. Catch part one of our interview with developer Crytek and its CEO Cevat Yerli here. Part two will go live at some point this week.

Bah, its a terrible implementation. It was impossible to suspend disbelief, for someone like me the fact you could skip was the only way I could play it a 2nd time through.

Tease.

This guy is trying to put the hype at an insane level ala peter molyneux
prepare yourself to be disapoint

AND, does this guy know Crysis1 had poor story/writing/setting and blank gameplay ?

I mean : this game was only saved because it was a technical monster and was badass because you could kill "tree" (not joking !)

Time to Work !

So which game story would you rate as being good?

I haven't really seen a game with a great story which has a comparable implementation, however Modern Warfare 2 had fewer flaws in its implementation in any case from what I saw.

Uncharted 2's story was compelling thats for sure. Don't know about Crysis though =(

I thought it was just fine. Can't make a comment about the Halo series besides Halo 1, I guess. Did it have a story? Didn't care - i loved the game at the time. I would also hazard to guess if U2 was a 360 exclusive you would be less critical of its story, lol. Ok, that was uncalled for. I am just stirring.

I find it interesting that storywise you enjoyed Uncharted 2 more than MW2. I must admit that I haven't played the games, however I am currently going through the first Uncharted and I'm pretty hooked to the story in an Indiana Jones sort of way.

I wouldn't say that suspending disbelief is my main attraction to any game - I loved the story in Deus Ex, also loved Ultima 8 and the narrative in Metal Gear Solid 4. Given that you are critical of Uncharted 2's story I would have expected you to identify games with a good story in stead. Wonder whether a game like Heavy Rain would be attractive to you, or whether you are looking forward for something like Alan Wake.
