I really like it, fun combat, cool story.
Seriously I don't get all the whining that went on, sometimes I can't but help slightly believe what this guy on kotaku said:
"All JRPG fans do is moan & whine...no wonder their genre is dying"
I don't see how SO4 deserved that much moaning and whining, its a quality game & RPG |
Do you think they whine because they don't want it to be better than the game they had when they were a kid
So the complainers are like "So they're like when I was they still made good videogames! now all they do is concentrate on graphics D:"
like grumpy old grandpa
I know you FF6, but you dont pan new JRPG's that makes sense

That could be a BIG problem, everything seems AMAZING when your 10 is a phrase I've seen used on many forums, I'm not sure if I agree with it.
In the past the cliches present in JRPg's now may have been fine, but now when the same peope are "grown up" they may hate those cliches.
Also games we love in our childhood evoke strong nostalgic memories, we tend to be biased towards them, I was listening to a podcast back when FF12 released and fans were rabidly hating on it, one of the podcast dude (his fav FF character is Cecil from FF4) said "I hate FF12 characters they aren't cool and have no personality, FF is dead now the FF4/6/7 days are long gone".
Then the other podcast guy said "Wait so Cecil had more of a personality than say Balthier/Basch from FF12?".....they got into a big discussion and came to a conclusion that when the other guy was like say 7 years old (he was when FF4 came out) Cecil may have seemed really cool & it might seem like he was "deep"......but in effect Balthier/Basch are cool in similar way.....maybe that guy just grew out of those things.
The big problem with lots of JRPG's are that they aren't gaining new fans, the same old fans are present & although the JRPG's may be similar to how they were they "seem worse".
Every person is different but I've seen lots of Podasts (RPGCast recently) talking about this problem.
This is why S-E keeps changing every FF, they attempt to gain new fans each gen....and I'm not sure how successful they have been at that.
But this gen all I've seen on loads of forums is people bashing JRPG's, and this time its JRPG fans too. The media has been weird too.
Its hard to know what someone wants in a JRPG now, an example I saw on neo-gaf was that some said "LO stays traditional and like a old school FF but gets a 78 metascore as critics think it "copies FF and is too old school", then FF13 comes and changes major things and ends up with a 83 metacritic and one of the reasons is that it changed from being an old FF (n terms of minigames, towns & so on)..........so what do critics want? It seems neither.
So while I don't completely believe in all of that sometimes I can't help but think maybe these things being said are true after seeing silly bashing on the net.
EDIT: And I'm not sure if its healthy for the genre now. FF & DQ will survive cus with each new one majority of the fans love it (yes even FF12/8 was liked by the majority even though haters don't want you to believe that).
But the smaller JRPG's can become a big victim of this & it isn't good for the genre.
