PS1 -- FF7

The game blew me away when I played it, no doubts there it was an amazing & unforgettable experience. The music, story, graphics were awesome at the time. And the CGI Cut Scenes were in a way something that made me keep playing, I wanted to get to the next "Cool" Cutscene.

No-one can forget the first time they saw Cloud & Co break out of the shinra building in bikes & other vehicles & then that minigame with the bike (which sucks now imo, but back then it was a moment of awe).

Now so many years in the future FF7 is my 5th Favorite FF.

PS2 -- FF10

I liked this much more than FF7. The graphics & CGi scenes like FF7 were way ahead of the game at the time. Now funnily enough I played FF10 at my friends house back then as I had a gamecube not a Ps2 (worst decision of ever I know).

So I got my "real" experience with it in 2006. Anyway I still watched/helped him finish the game back in 2001 or 2002.

I loved the combat system a lot, it was slow which was nice & you could switch character IN battle which was really really cool. The battle theme ruled too. And yes YUNA! I loved Yuna! Tidus was cool too, as was auron. But the rest of the cast didn't really get to me unfortunately, especially that useless Cat thing....Kimahri

Te JECHT IS SIN plot twist seems really cliched when I think about it now, but I was like 11 when I played it so it was cool!

Now 8 years in the future FF10 is my 3rd Favorite FF behind FF6 & FF13.

Yeah I got SO4:TLH

I really like it, fun combat, cool story.

Seriously I don't get all the whining that went on, sometimes I can't but help slightly believe what this guy on kotaku said:

"All JRPG fans do is moan & whine...no wonder their genre is dying"

I don't see how SO4 deserved that much moaning and whining, its a quality game & RPG

Do you think they whine because they don't want it to be better than the game they had when they were a kid

So the complainers are like "So they're like when I was they still made good videogames! now all they do is concentrate on graphics D:"

I know you FF6, but you dont pan new JRPG's that makes sense

That could be a BIG problem, everything seems AMAZING when your 10 is a phrase I've seen used on many forums, I'm not sure if I agree with it.

In the past the cliches present in JRPg's now may have been fine, but now when the same peope are "grown up" they may hate those cliches.

Also games we love in our childhood evoke strong nostalgic memories, we tend to be biased towards them, I was listening to a podcast back when FF12 released and fans were rabidly hating on it, one of the podcast dude (his fav FF character is Cecil from FF4) said "I hate FF12 characters they aren't cool and have no personality, FF is dead now the FF4/6/7 days are long gone".

Then the other podcast guy said "Wait so Cecil had more of a personality than say Balthier/Basch from FF12?".....they got into a big discussion and came to a conclusion that when the other guy was like say 7 years old (he was when FF4 came out) Cecil may have seemed really cool & it might seem like he was "deep"......but in effect Balthier/Basch are cool in similar way.....maybe that guy just grew out of those things.

The big problem with lots of JRPG's are that they aren't gaining new fans, the same old fans are present & although the JRPG's may be similar to how they were they "seem worse".

Every person is different but I've seen lots of Podasts (RPGCast recently) talking about this problem.

This is why S-E keeps changing every FF, they attempt to gain new fans each gen....and I'm not sure how successful they have been at that.

But this gen all I've seen on loads of forums is people bashing JRPG's, and this time its JRPG fans too. The media has been weird too.

Its hard to know what someone wants in a JRPG now, an example I saw on neo-gaf was that some said "LO stays traditional and like a old school FF but gets a 78 metascore as critics think it "copies FF and is too old school", then FF13 comes and changes major things and ends up with a 83 metacritic and one of the reasons is that it changed from being an old FF (n terms of minigames, towns & so on)..........so what do critics want? It seems neither.

So while I don't completely believe in all of that sometimes I can't help but think maybe these things being said are true after seeing silly bashing on the net.

EDIT: And I'm not sure if its healthy for the genre now. FF & DQ will survive cus with each new one majority of the fans love it (yes even FF12/8 was liked by the majority even though haters don't want you to believe that).

But the smaller JRPG's can become a big victim of this & it isn't good for the genre.

Dragon Quest 8: For what it was worth it was just an amazing RPG, stripped to the bare minimum, no innovation BS. Just everything a RPG should be aesthically pleasing great cast of characters, one of the best MAIN characters (Oh cares if he was mute, Link is but that doesn't take anything away from him) and great battle system.

Kingdom Hearts 2: Without completing the first one I went in to this not expecting much, but this game has turn me into a KH fanboy, great gameplay which left me wanting more. Hopefully BBS can only improve on this.

These two games for me is what every FFXIII lack in some parts.

The Jecht sin plot twist. To me avoided the cliche, because they told tidus 4 hours in. If they told him right before the battle that jecht was sin. that would have been like darth vader/luke skywalker

thats just what I think anyways

I play rpgs on all systems, but the PS2 and ! were really amazing for them.
VAlkyria is pretty good, but most of my Playstation rpg experience is from the 2 and 1.I liked Metal saga, a quirky tank rpg. FF is typically good, and I have played all of the playstation FF except 13. Star Ocean: TTEOT was a favorite of mine. Gosh, i don't think i could really list every single rpg i have played on the playstation systems.
