I have a usb 2.0 headset atm but if there was a big difference would eventually switch over to 3.5mm jacks. So does have a 5.1 or 7.1 sound card improve sounds on gaming headphones and can they improve sounds that use usb technology or just 3.5mm jacks? thanks guys any info would help me out.

I'm no audiofile, but so far every motherboard's built in 5.1 or 7.1 support has been plenty for me. In order to truly need a sound card you are going to be needing a high quality multi-hundred dollar set of 5.1 or 7.1 headsets to begin with. Sennheiser or Astro are two good quality headset brands for both gaming and just expert audio.
