I'm no audiofile, but so far every motherboard's built in 5.1 or 7.1 support has been plenty for me. In order to truly need a sound card you are going to be needing a high quality multi-hundred dollar set of 5.1 or 7.1 headsets to begin with. Sennheiser or Astro are two good quality headset brands for both gaming and just expert audio.
