Forums - Sony - How will Sony respond to Gears of War 3?

I don't really see the point.  None of the games mentioned will sell any systems.

they are all sequels to games that have already been released this Gen.

If someone was going to buy a console for Gears of war, Killzone or Resistance, then they would of bought it by now.

They probably won't.

At least not a shooter. I'm sure there will be other big games for the PS3 in early 2011 though. Perhaps LBP2, the Last Guardian or Agent. It will be easier to predict after E3, when we see what they have in store for the holiday.

Kind of a silly thread...

Why?  It's a perfectly logical question.  Seeing as how Sony has 2 exclusive shooters on the way that both could be ready by next April, it'd make sense that they release one of them at the same time as Gears.

Why would sony dance to the beat Microsoft is setting with releases. MS seems to do its own thing and really don't look at what Sony is doing...Nintendo espeically do their own thing.

If Insomniac have good ideas to make another Resistance game, and the game ends up being finished by April 2011...then sure, release it. Otherwise, why would sony rush to match Gears 3 with its own shooter and canibalize their own sales.

If anything they can release something like Last Rebelion and appeal to a different crowd...

If you look at their release schedules historically, Msft and Sony have strategically released their exclusives around the same time as each other to directly compete.  R1 vs Gears1.  R2 vs Gears 2.  LBP vs. Fable 2.  KZ2 vs Halo Wars. MAG vs ME2. Heavy Rain vs Splinter Cell (until it got delayed).  I know the last two aren't Microsoft first party titles but I'm sure since they were exclusives that MSFT had some say in the release date.

This strategy isn't unique to just Sony vs. Msft.  Competing sports titles usually come out on the same day.  Last year we saw inFamous and Prototype come out around the same time.  Call of Duty and Medal of Honor are both coming out this fall.  I could go on and on.

Bottom line is that I would be very surprised if Sony doesn't schedule one of its two big shooters to come out next spring to compete with Gears 3.  Hopefully we hear something at E3

Theres nothing much they can really do, after Halo Gears is the highest selling series for 360 so i wouldn´t know how they can counter that but best would be imo to just announce a few games for next year.

like companies make plans according to competition releases...I'm sure Sony and Nintendo will have games around that time to please THEIR audience, eve if we're talking about a puzzle game or whatever.

but you know what? Uncharted 3 closed Beta would be a nice "coincidence" for April 2011.

My guess is Killzone 3. The release dates have a good chance of being close (though there hasn't been any word about K3 release). That's just my guess.

With yesterday's official announcement of Gears of War 3 coming out April 2011, is Sony going to schedule one of its own shooter franchises to go head to head?

The first two Resistance games were both released in November and have faced off directly against Gears of War (and gotten crushed in sales).  Since Resistance 3 hasn't been announced yet, a Fall 2010 release is unlikely so perhaps it will follow Gears to April to renew the rivalry. The infamous R3 billboard is from Battle of Los Angeles which comes out February 2011.  That sounds like a perfet time to start an ad campaign for a big April release.

Sony also has Killzone 3 which we already know is in the works.  April 2011 is just a little over 2 years since KZ2 came out so theoretically a sequel could be ready to go by then.  With Killzone's testosterone driven "Alpha Team" and jaw dropping graphics it is a logical choice to go up against Gears' Delta Squad and the excellent graphics that series is known for.

What do you think Sony is going to do?  R3?  KZ3?  Or neither?

Why do you expect a "response" from Sony?  Sony is doing what it is doing to at least get to second, and trying to take control of the "agenda" that matters.  In doing this, why would it suddenly go, "Oh my, Gears 3 is coming!  What can we do to counter it?"  This isn't like Microsoft with Forza, needing its own driving sim, so it releases it, or Sony with ModNation Racer to counter Mario Kart.  Gears fits into the FPS genre (YES, you aim like a FPS, so get over this people), and Sony has two franchises it has in this (Resistance and Killzone), and they will release them when ready.  They also have MAG and Socom.  They aren't lacking in the FPS shooter territory, so there isn't a need for them to respond.

This is likely FAR MORE of the case of the industry having release windows for certain titles.  I don't see where it is in response to the other for doing it.  I would be stumped to see how the heck Fable and LBP are supposed to be responses to each other, or Heavy Rain and Splinter Cell for that matter.
