The commercials should be judged on their own merit and apart from the sales, as their effectiveness doesn't necessarily have to directly correlate with more sales. Most people consider the Apple Macintosh commercials from the 1984 Ridley Scott video to the latest Mac guy versus PC guy campaign to be far better than anything ever made by IBM/Intel/Microsoft. The PC's however have continued to sell more than Macintoshes, but that's because the product is better aligned with the marketplace despite having inferior and less effective commercials. Therefore the Kevin Butler commercials could be, and in my opinion are, better than the Wii would like to play commercials, and the Wii versus PS3 sales don't have to factor into this in any significant manner. |
I know loads of people who bought Wiis, DSs (and Wii Fits) just of the back of the commercials. I know no-one who bought a PS3 or 360 console (or even game) because of a commercial only (it's always reviews or game demos that have swayed their opinion). Nintendo has reached a whole new casual market through their Advertisements, and have generated phenomenal sales in the process.
Nintendos 'Blue Ocean' Marketing campaign has demolished the opposition this Generation, and I expect to see very similar adverts on TV when Natal and Move are released as they try and get a piece of the action.
