Maybe its the awful characters that are making the story seem bad to you.

No, I do not. Series loyalty does not prompt me to finish a game.

FF8's gameplay is terrible. Its characters/story are terrible. I'll play a game if either one of the elements is good enough, but it is not for FF8. And if the story doesn't start being good within the first 5-10 hours, I just couldn't care.

Well we clearly disagree on the story.

for me the gameplay (over reliance on summons got boring), characters and world are among the worst in the series. But I loved the story and some plot twists blew my mind away. I just want you to experience those plot twists, they are really cool. (some people hate em though).

God I've bought dozens upon dozens of sucky ass games. Recent games I said fuck it to: Dante's Inferno (360), Borderlands (PC), Red Faction II (PC), Shellshock 2 (PC), Perfect Dark Zero (picked it up recently), The Calling (Wii). The only one of those that wasn't terrible was Red Faction 2 and Borderlands, but both were repetitive and boring as hell after the first few hours. Some of the Fallout 3 DLC was garbage too.

If they remade it (or left it) and took out the Draw Magic system, I would play it.

The only ones I can think of that I bought are the wii Bleach game and Mario Kart Wii. Motorstorm came with my Playstation so it doesn't count, and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising was a gift. I actually finished Mercenaries 2.
