Kylie Dog you are completely full of it. The only thing that was better on PS1 was the FMV. You seem to be the only one saying different. I compared both games side by side on the same TV when I bought the N64 version. I didn't think it was possible for them to squeeze a two CD game in a cartridge at the time and aside from the FMV the N64 version was clearly superior graphically. They didn't upscale the backgrounds either, the original backgrounds were rendered at a higher resolution and then down scaled to 320x240. Since they had access to the original game assets for the port they redid them at 640x480.

The only one full of it is you.  They were upscaled from the PS1 game.  If you want to see real improved background resolution look at the DC version of RE2.

N64 only looked better if you had the 4 meg add on cart. Possibly you didn't have this?

I played through every version of RE2 out there and N64 does look a bit smoother than PS1... PC version beats all but looks funny as hell when the model resolution is 1024x768 and backgrounds are still 640x480 lol.

Yeah I had the 4 Meg cart. Couldn't get the full benefits of Perfect Dark without. Even without the cart, the in game graphics for the N64 were better though.

@KylieDog

You are full of crap. You are the only one that saying that the in game graphics of the N64 version weren't better than the PS1 version. That's what made RE2 for N64 so amazing, with the exception of the FMV the game looked better than the PS1 version despite having less than 1/20th of the memory to work with. N64 one 64MB cartridge. PS1 version two 650MB CDs.

I had the expansion pack and I already acknowledged there are less jaggies than on the PS1 on the character models due to the bluring technique used.  His claim they recreated the backgrounds in higher resolution is just false though, they were upscaled.

Keep backsliding Kylie, maybe you'll eventually admit you were wrong in five or six posts.

Either Kirby 64, Rogue Squadron, Majora's Mask or Just about every RARE game.

Pixel Art can be fun.

I can see why KylieDog thinks that the PS1 version looks better.  The textures looked sharper in the PS1 version from what I remember (I own RE2 on PS1, my friend has it on N64).  I haven't played either version in a couple years, but maybe 2 years ago, we played a bit of RE2 on the N64, and the textures were washed out and blurry.  Of course, I'd take the higher resolution over the blurry textures, but I can see why someone would choose otherwise.

If this thread is still around later this week, and I get a chance to borrow my friend's copy of RE2 on the N64, I'll do a side by side comparison.

EDIT:  And yes, I do own the expansion pack for the N64.

Perfect Dark, DK64, Banjo Tooie and Jet Force Gemini. Old RARE was the best in graphics and sound department.

Oh boy...really, on paper the N64 was the stronger system, but the cartridge space really hampered what could have been some amazing looking games.

I would have to say of that gen, Conker BFD, Perfect Dark, Majora's Mask, were all the top lookers.

Nothing on the PS1 really paled in specwise comparison. Turok 2 was also great.

I'm playing Marjora's Mask on virtual console now and it still looks amazing in places. The colors, lighting and incredible draw distance... it still impresses me today.

What is this backsliding nonsense.  You're posting bullshit and I'm correcting you.

I mean its not like I own every single RE game, that I own every single port of every game including in several cases the same game on the same system but just different region versions too, giving me no reason to have any bias against one version in any way at all and so no reason to post incorrect facts.

Oh wait...the above is perfectly true.

Why is it that you are the only one arguing about the graphical fidelity of RE2 on N64 then? I've been on this forum for a while. You post BS and you'll have several people calling you out. I don't see anyone disagreeing with me, but they seem to be disagreeing with you.

As for the topic, I don't think this game will count since the Neo Geo is a console the proceeding generation but I'll post it anyway. Art of Fighting 3. AoF3 has the smoothest animation of any Neo Geo fighting game I've played. When you combine that with the large size of the character sprite and the surprisingly well animated backgrounds, you get arguably the best looking 2D fighting game prior to Blaz Blue.

PS1 would have to be Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX for 3D
