Forums - Nintendo - Wii & DS were you expecting the phenomenon?

I was extremely skeptical of both the DS and Wii. Mostly because they were such radical designs from anything Nintendo had done before and frankly, anyone had ever done before. And since I knew there were a lot of people who would never latch onto change, I felt Nintendo may have doomed themselves (as was the style at the time).

Thankfully, Nintendo proved me wrong. I bought a DS at launch and it blew me away. And when the Wii came out, it didn't quite blow me away, but it eventually turned out to be quite good.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

In 2004, I figured PSP was going to steamroll DS, and we'd have GBA2 by the end of 2005.

In 2006, I was more upbeat on Wii (and figured it'd do better than GameCube) but still thought it'd be a distant 3rd.

I thought the D.S. would take off once I myself had one.

The Wii Hm,  I am surprised by what it has done and happy

I am a gaming fan first, but if not for Nintendo's games and consoles I do not think I would bother anymore.

Overall I was not really expecting it I suppose, but something needed to happen as the direction some companies are taking it do not appeal to me at all least not anymore.

DS - No. I was expecting that PSP would be the winner because of the GTA in PSP early lifetime. I thought it would be a DS-Killer.

Wii - Yes

Definitely.

Cuz I'm awesome, y'know?

Ninty has always had an extremely strong handheld library. I expected the DS to do great, but I admit, it is doing better than I expected.

I didn't think the Wii would take off this dramatically. The new audience they tapped into really helped boost their sales. I expected Sony to lead, and then Ninty and MS duke it out for second place. In reality, the result was completely different.

Nope--I just knew they looked awesome.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

Yes, but then again I expected the Gamecube to reclaim the first place position the PS1 had stolen.

Also, John Lucas predicted everything in a big way.

No. Despite recognized the risk, I thought it wasn't going to do so well but better than GC.. Well thought it'd be in a closer situation to the PS3 or 360 right now than the success it is having right now. I actually expected close competition between PS3 and 360 and that by the time the PS3 got lower in price it would pull away thanks to Japan and European support.

It's not that I expected the Wii to be a total bust, I just didn't think the likes of Wii Sports could capture the European audience like it did. I knew the Nintendo franchises would get Japan and a similar market in America, but I had no idea the system would take off in Europe like it did. Obviously now we are in 2010 and we expect Wii to continue these massive sales, but if you really think about it, what it has done now has really setup Nintendo for another solid 10 years as it has totally changed the market.

So in short, no I didn't expect it to be a huge success.

Not at all... mostly because I didn't pay any attention to consoles at all at that point.
