Ok JJSeth, which group of people here do you think fit the Nintendo "Blue Ocean" target market for the Wii Fit...

Group A:

or

Group B:

Now, to solve this most difficult of questions, you need to look around you. The people you see everyday, do they look more like group A, or group B? And which group, above, do you think is more like to buy Wii fit?  Which is more likely to spend a few hours a day in a gym?

Oh, and the Blue ocean strategy is not about gamers either. It's about the general populace. The Wii is not targeted at gamers. If you still think so, then you need to take another look because it isn't just gamers buying the wii.

I'd say neither for my part. And; you do realize that not every single individual who lifts weights look like that freak, right?

Then I'd say you missed the point.

Nintendo is targeting the "everybody" crowd -- that's the crowd that doesn't have their own set of weights and personal trainer. I was exaggerating the point with the pictures. In general, most people don't visit the gym on a regular basis because it's a) too expensive, b) too time consuming, c) can't get a babysitter for the kids, d) just don't wanna because it's boring, 3) too cold to go out. Nintendo is targeting this crowd with Wii Fit.

Jman. clever way to attempt to make my point moot, but you did fail. How many of those in group b own a Wii? I'd suggest that very few do have one. And most people don't want to be freakishly huge like the guy in group A. I know I wouldn't. But I'd also like to be a bit more toned and have some good definition as well as a bit more strength. Are you going to get that by using a balancing board? Or joggin in place? Or heck, jogging around your coffee table?

Free weights is one of the better ways to build definition and muscle. Doing aerobics on the Wii which will be quite limited won't have great results for most people. Do they have a built in training plan that will help people get a balanced workout? Will people get bored of the game quickly because they hate a few of the other activities for the game? Absolutely they will get bored of it quickly. I have a feeling that a few of you on this site that think this is so great will buy one, but only to help sales numbers while it collects dust sitting in a corner of the room. Cardio is great, but it's not everything when it comes to getting into shape. You still need to do some weight training to help develop the muscle mass and to help convert much of that fat.

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

I'm not talking about Wii Fit's ability to help you lose weight or build muscle mass. I'm talking about sales. Wii Fit is targeted at the general populace. It is targeted at getting people who don't exercise or who do little exercise to do it with fun. I won't spend the money going to a gym, but I will spend a little money to play a game and get some exercise at the same time. And I'm in that "blue ocean".

So you are asking a bunch of questions and assuming that all of the answers to those questions are in line with your view of what you want Wii fit to be like.  Or at the very least you are heavily implying that will be the case.  This way nobody can really argue against you since you never really made an argument for these points you "just asked the questions" and  for the astute reader also implied the answers.

Of course my favorite part of the post is when you actually broke with tradition and answered one of the questions....ie  "Absolutely they will get bored of it quickly.".  So either you have played Wii fit and think it gets boring quickly or you are making statements you are unqualified to make and passing them off as fact simply to strengthen your position.   Since to my knowledge you don't live in Japan I think it is pretty easy to understand which it is.  Hell even if you did have a copy of Wii fit it would still be considered stretching the truth to take your personal opinion and declare an "absolute".

To Each Man, Responsibility

Careful you don't drown in that "blue ocean" as it may be filled with quite a bit of fail.

I just can't fathom it being a huge mega hit as some of you are assuming will be the case because it's something that should be "good" for you. Yea, it's better then sitting on your butt doing nothing.

BTW, how well did the power pad do for the NES that was used for games like "World Class Track Meet"? I know some who had it, but most would just use the regular controller for that game and not the pad.

And the key thing is, the key demographic for the Wii is not the general population that gets into exercise, especially yoga, aerobics, etc.   The key demographic for any console are gamers.

There you go!

Now you know why it'll sell.  Never underestimate the "it's better than sitting on your butt doing nothing" crowd.

What happens when those who normally sit on their butt doing nothing get winded from the game and say "heck with it, I'm sweating and not eating donuts at the same time."
