Avatar is one of the most successful movies ever and 3D was one of the biggest features of the film. At the same time, Sony is announcing a 3D feature in the PS3, which wasn't projected for such thing. Therefore, success is not garanteed.

Now, if Sony release a Avatar Bluray with the 3d feature in it, could it be a killer app and help in the addoption of the Technology(along with the 3d tvs) ?

I voted no, movie ticket prices are 1 thing but buying a 3d tv and a Ps3 + extra glasses just to watch avatar doesn't seem reasonable.

AVATAR will not be 3D on Blu ray.

5 bucks says it will by the end of 2010...

It won't be 3d at launch cause it comes out April 22. Only 3D bluray stuff available by then are by Samsung. However once 3D tech gets some penetration from all manufacturers you will see Avatar 3D. Christmass 2010 is my guess...

I think the PS3 is going to showcase 3D in much more interesting ways outside of movies, and games that will be much more important. 3D XMB in conjunction with Move, and the new apps store later this year will be what moves 3D forward on PS3. Avatar will do its part, but I see it as a very low end 3D production, compared to what we will come to expect from games and apps on PS3.

3D technology will take too long to adopt. First off, movies in 3D are great but the fact that broadcast TV is not even ready to jump to 3D look how long it took them to jump to DTV. Consumers are not going to make the jump cause the technology is an add on expense. Plus the glasses don't come with the 3DTV. A family of four will need to purchase 4 pairs of glasses at $200-$300 a pair adding to the cost.

All that = FAIL

I've adopted it early 2009...as have 4 million other people in North america thus far. Believe it or not, 3D tech has a pretty good user base...and these people are willing to spend cash for a quality product.

You don't need 3000 dollar TV to watch 3D. You can buy a 200 dollar 22 inch Viewsonic monitor and 200 dollar Nvidia 3D vision. If you have a bluray drive on your computer and a decent video card you can watch 3D bluray movies with ease.

You get two pairs of 3D glasses with a SONY tv, the other's do not offer it though

Ok people being hit hard in this recession will not adopt 3D until the prices go down. The mass never buys new tech until prices go down. Think LCD and Plasma years ago. "Nu uh i'm not spending all that money, i could get a cheap car instead". Give it time.

I thought 3D Avatar is planned for next year. Bare bone release on 04/22, multiple disc special edition DVDs with extra for Christmas then 3D Blu-ray version next year. Triple dip  of the release.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.
