Oh crap, forgot about those. Damn. Yeah either this design won't work or they'll drop support for those puzzles. The DSi dropped the GBA slot so it can't play Guitar Hero or use the GBA expansion pak for more songs for Band Brothers. That could happen...

It actually wouldn't be hard to deal with at all. One fix could possibly be to slide the screen. Another could be to have a "sleep" button on the side. Neither would be a perfect fix, but the functionality and possibilities of this form factor would likely be far better than trying to keep that minor feature in, honestly.
Another fix would be to simply change the mounting hardware. Many touchscreen laptops use a swivel-hinge that allows one to switch from laptop to tablet and back. If Nintendo could find a way to do that in a way that'd be STRONG - especially in the hands of children - AND simultaneously easy to slide - especially in the hands of children - then it'd easily be the best design possible.

One thing you're missing is that it doesn't have to be a single screen on that swiveling section, anyways. One of the rumors going around about it said Nintendo supposedly leaked part of the description where they said the screens were so close to each other that they could function as one single unit. With a parallax filter over top, that's even easier to pull off because it can "mask" the pixel or two of space between the screens.
Of course, if that were true, they'd be using a rather high-quality screen to pull this off, and I'm not sure they'd do that. Could be wrong, though.
There are ways to fool the hardware into thinking a single screen is two, though. It's not hard at all. They simply have to have the video feed from the DS hardware go through separate hardware before sending it to the screen. The signal originates as two screens, but is combined via additional hardware into a single feed.
And as I said, the emulator thing I showed was just a gimmick I pulled and that I normally play it on a single screen. I swear, you say you read things, but by everything else you type up...
