I knew this was gonna happen but I didn't expect it to happen that fast. The important question now is whether or not this will attract more hackers.

Oh trust me my ire isnt specifically reservered for him. What I find troubling is you are comparing what every company in the world does, to a hacker, who exploits what hardworking individuals did for his own benefits. All Sony is doing is trying to protect an investment, yes they only exist to make money off of me, but in return I am still getting a product that I will enjoy because I bought it for that purpose. Geohots actions could prevent me from getting those products if piracy becomes an issue on the PS3 like it has the PSP. His being a douchebag benefits only him and pirates, and it hurts everyone else in the industry. |
I see your point, totally, I guess I just don't believe that piracy is able to cripple a console in any significant fashion. I hear people say PSP is killed by piracy, but I would argue that PSP is killed by the fact that it's just not that cool and that it's impossible to compete with Nintendo in that market. I mean, look at multiplatform sales between PS3 and Xbox360. 360 games tend to sell as well or usually better than the PS3 counterpart on a system that is hackable vs. a system that is not. Wii is an even better example, even easier to play pirated games than the HD consoles, and it is the best selling system and has many of the highest selling titles of this generation. I don't think there is any significant danger that piracy is going to slow the release pace on PS3. PS3 will succeed because it is a great machine with a great back catalog and a lot of potential for future awesome games. The number of people who are going to pirate games is not going to kill the console, just like it didn't kill the Wii or the 360.
I'm not quite sure what people mean when they say that Sony took away a feature without giving anything back in return... when Sony has improved the PS3 through several updates in the past. Sure, on occassion they might take away something, but they don't have to give any new features in the same update in which they took one away, as long as they keep updating the PS3. It's just silly, and a bit greedy, to claim that Sony is taking away something with nothing in return. Access to updates is still free as far as I know.
On a side note, why argue whether or not the removal of the Other OS will help to prevent piracy or just cause it to happen faster? It doesn't change anything, and Sony had to do something. Hopefully the removal of Other OS is just the first step they plan to take. As for Geohot, if he keeps this up I hope he makes a mistake and gets sued.

You're trying to paint some picture that probably isn't relevant. |
There was a bruce willis movie awhile back,where an autistic kid figures out some complex code. lol

Why would I feel stupid? I never used other OS, I never planned on pirating games, I never had a problem with Sony trying to disable hackers.
@kyliedog
Ah, I see what you're saying now, I slightly misunderstood earlier.
The fact of the matter is still this though. Let's take a trip....to a land where Other OS still exists. PS3s can now run unsigned code in game OS. Some dbag makes an ISO loader or what have you and games are being pirated. People still have to go through other OS and run a few scripts (probably), probably have to wait a little while for stuff to load, then they're off, playing their pirated games.
Sure, at some point, someone other than GeoHot (since he stated he doesn't want to) who has knowledge of how GeoHot's hacks work probably ends up making CFW so that you don't have to load the other OS and run all the scripts, etc., thus making pirating easier.
Now, back to the present. The CFW to do what I described above already exists. Sure, maybe it's not a huge deal and probably would have taken some hackers maybe 2-3 months to come up with it once the geohot hacks became mainstream knowledge, but hey that's still 2-3 months more of "slightly more secure" PS3s.
So my point is that 3.21 really did nothing but speed things up (maybe not speed them up that much but still, something).
And those movies are funny but not the best of analogies. It's not like Sony has been consistently working on seeing how the PS3 can be hacked. They did at first, but once they decided thing were fine and PS3s went to be manufactured, they probably stopped caring. I have found many security flaws in code that companies who designed it and made it failed to look over (sometimes those companies are the ones I am working for, heh) and I could probably do the same for hardware if I cared enough.

People like me say that not to be greedy but because it is true. Sure I have enjoyed most of the updates (not 3.21) and like having them. But, don't be naive, Sony didn't give us those FW updates to be nice to us, they did so because of competition and they want features so that people don't buy other systems because they have certain other features. If I went out and bought my PS3 now, I would still have all those features even though since I wouldn't have updated my FW at all, Sony would not have given me anything.
I say they gave us nothing in return because they did, at least from the release notes when I updated. If I was running 3.15 firmware (back when 3.15 was required) or 3.21 firmware now, my game experience would be just the same except that I would still have other OS support. Thus, by updating my firmware I gained.....nothing and lost.....other OS support to me that is the definition of "losing something and getting nothing back in return."

But in the end, your PS3 has gotten better and has received more things than it has had when you first bought it (should be the case for basically everyone, as slim owners don't have otheros anyway and older owners have gotten multiple updates).
Besides, it's a bit weak to go "they didn't give us the updates to be nice" when it's about additional things you can do and that you have gotten and then go mental (like some here) because they took something away that was merely done to protect their product.
