Forums - Nintendo - Destructoid's Jim Sterling "2010 = Year of the Wii"

I think that all of us who own a Wii can agree on two points:

1. There are a lot of games out there that are interesting to the point that others are envious.
2. There appears to be quite a bit of copying of the concept of motion controls going on with regard to control style in peripherals coming out this year.

The first comes from the article -- and the conversation herein.
The second comes from general observation.

Finally, with regard to general observation, posters should be smarter than to rise to the bait of another - particularly if the person does not own the system they are trashing and has not built up a reputation of being generally fair and even-handed in their comments and criticisms.

Mike from Morgantown

Sometimes on these forums I want to make a point or 2 and don't really know why to say what I want to get across.

Thank you so much mike. Saved me some time.

Qays = bigtime troll and should be ignored.

@jarrod: I have ginded in DS a lot. Maybe thats just me play style but I have done it and it has served me well. I also don't agree about the yard trash being hard at all.

Well, okay maybe in drops but I mean the actual gameplay as in the, you know, fighting? The actual gameplay is amazingly solid. Although I'm sure MH is great too.

Sure, that's what I've heard.  I'm curious though, can you expand on the combat system for me.  That's one element that's always been a bit brushed over in stuff I've read and listened to, I'm guessing it's more involved than something like Oblivion?

Mario Kart Wii took away co-op racing and snaking, and added 12 player online, bikes, wheelies, challenges, stunts, more characters, new items, new courses and older courses, more vehicles, more characters, Miis, and more control schemes. Most of that is just "new stuff," but the new drifting, new drafting, bikes-vs-karts, and motion steering all make the game feel really different.

Brawl added a level editor, online level sharing, online photo sharing, online fighting, more characters, non-Nintendo characters, more dynamic crazy levels, assist trophies, stickers, challenges, a co-op adventure mode, a co-op events mode, a co-op boss rush mode, more music than any game has ever had, more customizability, and more control schemes. And much to the dismay of the Melee tournament crowd, they replaced wave-dashing with random tripping, which is awesome. And they nerfed Fox. Ask any fan which one is their favorite and you'll get a really long speech. These games are crazy different.

There's a reason Smash and Kart sequels don't go 1, 2, 3, while games like Halo and God of War do. Those are direct sequels that are continuing the same story, they can't change the game too much without ruining it. They need to improve some things here and there, but keep the game the same enough to finish the story. Kart and Smash are always re-invented to utilize a new console's features and you only get one per console.

I'm not bashing Halo or God of War here. I'm explaining why direct sequels don't change as much as certain Nintendo franchises. Look at Star Fox. It still can't decide what it wants to be.

Demon's Souls is not luck based in the slightest. Did you see any of the reviews for it? If you die, it's because yous suck and need to get better. The game is very fair. MH is more skil based? Demon's Souls requires great skill, and not because the game is cheap. Have you played it, or just Monster Hunter? Or either?

MHTri requires more skill, I've played both and although both can be luck based at certain situations, MHTri is much more skill and gear build up based, I've also said that MHTri is a better game than Demon's Souls, and I do love Demon's Souls as well.

Lost in Shadow needs more hype. It looks AWESOME!

You can probably add Samurai Warriors 3, Xenoblade and Zelda to the US 2010 list.
I'd throw in Deathsmiles 360 too, Cave fans are few in number but great in power. Oh, and Portal 2!

Damn that's a lot of shooters.

All I need is some Light Trax and BIT.TRIP RUNNER and I'm basically set. I'm gonna put all my Art Style and BIT.TRIP games right at the front of my Wii Menu. It's gonna be sexxee as hell.

Light Trax looks so hot. Personally, La-Mulana is my most frothingly wanted WiiWare game though. PLZ don't take as long as Cave Story! ;_;

FEZ on XBLA looks holishit amazing as well.

If that's the case, perhaps you should give it up?

I honestly didn't expect you to take that comment seriously. Allow me to clarify: trolling doesn't burn me. If you do honestly think MH3 is better than Demon's Souls I'd be interested in hearing your reasoning.

They are different in certain aspects, Demon's Souls has more of a linear level structure whereas MHTri works off a general open map(these are big maps) with different aspect for each area that you load into, so it's hard to compare that part since the equations are different. The thing about Demon's Souls is that you fight in a linear fashion due to game design, some of the bosses are exploitable, and I don't understand why I have to unload a shit ton of arrows just to get that trophy because it's bullshit when I can just run past the damn flame breaths, fuck achievements and fuck trophies, that's why I hate them.

Also, a lot of people praise the online system, and to a certain extend, I think it's a pretty cool concept, but to play with friends, you have to drop your stone in some hidden area after one of you suicides or some other dood would just go hey! blue light! and fuck it up, not very coop friendly in that it has that coop feature, it's a half broken system tbh.

Another thing I have to complain about Demon's Souls is quiet frankly, the bosses, they are way too easy to master, and I understand that the game offsets that by uh, killing you in 2 shots, which is not exactly the ideal way to balance the bosses, all it does is punish the shit out of the new players and piss people, who are not as good at these kind of games, off. The tutorial is just bad in that game, and that has nothing to do with zomg it's hardcore! It's just plain bad, doesn't help either when assholes make you jump off a cliff with "help" notes.

MHTri, oh where do I start, I love that game, it's the first MH I've ever played, so I don't know about the changes they made, but whatever they did, they did it right. The most important part is of course, the ability to use dual analog with the game, so camera is never a real issue. The SP is pretty well done too, you don't even realize that you are doing tutorial when you first start playing it. There is farming, gathering, crafting of all sorts of different armor and weapons, you also craft traps, potions, buffs, etc. You name it, they prolly have it. SP is not even half the real game either even though the ending was already pretty epic, the important part is the online aspect of it, and it's so good. ><;

The bosses have basic moves but are dynamic enough that the fights never feels dull, you have to attack different parts of the body using strategies to extract the parts you want for crafting, the environments have different interactions depending on where you are, the hit detection is excellent, and it's a game that you can easily sink 500+ hours in without trouble, and it actually feels rewarding as you get better geared because the bosses are balanced correctly, it's oh my god so fucking good. I can't wait for the NA release on the 20th, it's driving me nuts thinking about it with the addition of Wiispeak, for fuck sake, 12 days left! arrrrggghhh!

Damn, I haven't even heard of La-Mulana. Just looked it up on YouTube and Wikipedia. New gameplay trailer uploaded April 1st. Looks awesome. Thanks. And thanks again for tipping me off that Light Trax was a remake of Dotstream. It almost went under my radar. WiiWare is kicking my ass. I still need to get Cave Story and Mega Man 10. Ugh.
