It's a post-launch drop - no different really to what was expected. Typical weekly sales in the uk (aside from DS) are ~25k . |
couldn't agree more with ioi, it is not that bad.
Buy it and pray to the gods of Sigs: Naznatips!

that's a huge drop, although i have to admit we haven't seen many launches in console history where they have been so well supplied right from the beginning. Obviously if PS3 would continue to sell this much every week they would be in good shape, but i don't see that happening. We'll just have to see what happens over the next few weeks though.
currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X
I really don't see how anyone can be surprised... It didn't sell out on launch.
Anyone else think this launch is following the sales trend of a video game?

Well it was the all-time record for week one ,with between 165-172 K consoles sold .It was pretty obvious it would fell a great degree .
When we reported the spanish data some days ago it was stated that it sold 75K in the weekend and 25K in the second week ,so thats a 75% fall .82% and with a record-breaking launch to compare isnt half bad .
If it sold 20-25K in Spain and 30K in Uk in the second week it is good numbers .For the record ,the X360 has been doing in Spain some 1K weekly for most of 2006 and PS2 has been doing some 15K weekly since many years .Those numbers would mean some 100K in Spain and 120K in UK monthly ...and thats great numbers ,too great in fact so probably sales will fall further in next weeks until they stabilize .
It should be compared to other consoles weekly sales ,not to its record-breaking launch numbers .
So, well over 200k PS3s for the UK within just 2 weeks! 8-)
Resistance at number 2, Motorstorm at number 3, down from 1 and 2 respectively the week before. Only topped by the highly anticipated PC game C&C 3, which I am sure received many pre-orders.

I'm not saying it is good, more that last week was overly high (as expected - most hyped and well-stocked launch of all time) while this week is more typical. In fact I think it will drop back to ~20k for most of the year. Anyone thinking it would overtake Wii / 360 any time soon and keep posting big numbers was being a little naive |
I agree with ioi, no one should expect the PS3 to overtake the Wii or the 360. I don't believe Sony will even be making as many as 10 million PS3 units this year, much less selling each one. The PS3 is pretty much dead in the water as far as taking first place goes... people always say the PS3 will come back in 2008 and stuff, but I just don't see how considering that the Wii is only going to continue to increase it's huge gap and the 360 is already lightyears ahead. People act like the Wii and 360 will just stop selling altogether and that the PS3 will start selling millions per month when it can't even do that on launch weeks.
Anyway, I'm ranting.... I wouldn't consider this drop bad, but it certainly follows the recent trends we've been seeing with the JP and US launch.
One more ,and important ,thing .
The 82% drop refers to the full first week of the PS3 in UK ,not to only the first two days that we know it sold 165K .So the numbers could be higher than what we are pondering here .

Yeah, but you're basing your figures on "typical" consoles. The PS3 is not typical.
While MS or Nintendo were counting on the 20 millions owners of their old gens for the launch of their Next Gen, Sony can count on 110 millions of PS2 owners. You would expect very high figures, not only the first WE, but also the next ones.

The PS3 is not even out for 2 whole weeks yet, so it must be comparing the first week it launched and where it was only available the last 3 days of the week, with the next whole week. And did any reliable source confirm that PS3 sold 100k units in Spain or was it just someone from Sony?
