Forums - Nintendo - Will Wii 2 have 3D?

There is no reason why the next system won't be capable of 3D (current PC's are already doing it) but I doubt whether it will be a focus or a major selling point.

Around the Network

I have to say no. HD is one thing, it wasn't as "mainstream" or fully developed when the Wii came out. 3-D will take even longer to be fully developed, and even then I don't believe it will ever become a "standard" in the sense HD might. There is still different "formats" and methods for home 3D and I don't think we are at the point where you can say one will stick over another. You can buy one of the 3D TV's now, but it would almost be like buying HD-DVD over a Bluray player back when those first were launched. Some even speculate Bluray hasn't fully caught on to the point where it will be the next big successor to the original DVD. Nintendo isn't foolish enough to jump into 3D on a home console.

DS is completely different, you will only ever play a DS game on a DS, it doesn't matter what kind of TV, speakers, or cables you might have in your living room. The screen and system are in one wrapped up package.

Nintendo is not going to assume about what you have in your living room when it comes to anything really new, they're just going to go with what has the most wide-spread compatibility at the time of release.

Btw, why all the "wii 2" talk this generation? Has Nintendo (like Playstation) ever slapped a 2 or 3 on a console? sure they slapped "Super" and "64" on, but even with 64 it reffered to the power of the console not the number of the console.

I kind of hope not. While I think on a Handheld it might be cool. I do not think I would care for 3D games on a big screen.

No.

1. By 2012 there will be no significant 3D presence in the home market to warrant the feature to be a significant part of the next console.

2. Nintendo doesn't make the TVs for the home consoles and they have stated they greatly dislike the current home experience centered around expensive glasses. (I 100% agree)

3. Regardless of any of the above, 3D on a home console really isn't hard and would be possible on any future console solely based on the approximate hardware power for each machine.

You do realize 3D on the next TVs don't require Bluray right? A DVD could have the same affect with the same TV/Glasses tech. It really isn't that big of a deal what the PS3 is doing. Sony was only boasting that unlike other bluray players, they're PS3 HDMI connection could be upgraded to work with the new HDMI spec for carrying the 3D information.

There are many 3D capable games on PCs right now that run standard DVDs. 360 could easily get the same software as a download. Only issue would be the older HMDI port that unlike the PS3 can't be upgraded due to the type the 360 chose to utilize.

4. The only reason its a big deal on the 3DS and the only reason Nintendo is doing it is because they control the viewing experience and glassless screens are finally within the right costs.

finally within the right cost for small screens, bigger screens are another story. Also, home 3D will always feature some kind of shutter glasses, not the kind you get in theatres. It's not only technically "harder to do", but from a business stand point, they would never want to have you able to just bring "free" glasses home with you for your TV. They want to be able to charge as much as they want for them.
