Forums - Sony - Can Sony create a new franchise as big as Gran Turismo?

I'd be very happy If they would be able to make new franchises like that. But as long as they can make fantastic games like uncharted, god of war, etc. . I do not care if they won't reach 10mil sold.

Those games are very epic. The more people buy it the better. But as long as you have the game and you like it why would you care if it hasn't sold 10mil+?

May the adjustments be with you

I feel a disturbance in the sales

lbp is their only franchise i could see being as big as gran turismo next generation(shooters and platformers are the only genres i see with growth this generation, rpg's are hit or miss.), MM is first party now so lets see what they can do.

"even a dead god still dreams"

I say its a given only for one reason.

- Gaming is still a very niche form of entertainment

Every gen gaming will grow bigger and bigger. As long as sony stays in the market I dont see why 10 million people wouldnt buy the same game. Last gen there were 200 million consoles sold in 10 years. Within 3 years of two major competitors out there is already half that number.

So I don't see why not next gen within three years there wont be 150 - 200 million consoles sold. The attach rate for that is a measly 5 - 7%

i think they will adventualy but i mean at the moment gran turismo (the main games) even sells more than halo so it will be a hard task

Do we have any solid numbers for Free Realms ? The MMORPG from SOE based on microtransactions and designed for a young audience. I've heard the number of 8 millions members but as it's free-to-play, I wonder how much money they make with it... Anyway, this kind of thing might be the new big franchise for Sony, who knows...

I think no one can make franchise as big as GT.Gran Turismo is bigger than just game. Most fans of motor sports know what GT is and many of them buy console only for that game.

If you ask me, the reason Sony has thrown so much money at software development is in hopes of creating a franchise as popular as GT, Halo, CoD, etc.

They haven't done it yet and I don't see it happening this decade either.

It's vice-versa. First they need to make "one hell of a game appealing to everyone" just like Mario then in 3 or 4 years they'd have "one hell of a franchise appealing to everyone".

I agree with these two.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

the question i always think is, can sony make a franchise as big as Mario/Pokemon and why/why not.

gran turismo is very big, but they should aim higher.

So much money? are you on crack? Their 2 best games have the same budget as 1 Natal game from THQ. And Natal doesn't have the user base as ps3 (probablly will never have Ps3s current user base) and I highly doubt THQ would expect Halo type numbers. Good try though.

BTW - Those are the only 2 games we really know the budget for and I doubt sony would green light games for much higher than that considering ND is a proven developing company. (oh sorry. excluding PD in this comment since their sonys bread and butter and GT5's budget is just a little bigger than that THQ game anyway)
