I dont know why people try to make the Slim as something that will help sell 360s.. SONYs slim wasnt the selling point, it was its price and focus on marketing. The re-design most likely had a very small effect on sales.

I dont see the need for a 360 slim tbh.

Every existing PS3 phat owner I know went and bought a Slim. I actually reckon at least 50-60% of PS3 slim sales was to existing owners. Me and all my 360 friends would definately rebuy the 360 Slim even though we have a 360. It happened with the PS2 as well. All of us ( me and my friends ) bought the Slim PS2 even though we had perfectly working Phat PS2's.

It makes sense. I have a 360 and would buy a 360 slim if they dropped the price. The only reason I did'nt buy a ps3 slim,is because I have the 60gb ps3. If it ever died on me,then I would just get the ps3 slim, instead of trying to get it fixed.

i dont think any 360 owner really cares about a smaller 360, if they drop the price sure they will sell more systems but nothing to write home about.

just focus on making better games and changing up the diversity a little

Im a 360 owner and I care about the 360 slim.

If my 360 breaks on me I might as well buy the slim when it comes out.

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!

pffft. I was expecting MGS4 for X360, finally...oh wait...

On topic: what's wrong with the 360's size? would a slim 360 save M$ enough $ in manufacturing that they could lower their prices under $200? I guess a "Natal bundle" would need to be priced at most $300 to be competitive, but I can see them doing that bundle with the arcade model, and introduce a new bundle or just plain 360 "elite" for $250.

Its not a significant revenue stream and its probably worth more to them to reposition the Arcade as an even more viable hardware SKU because for a reasonable number of people in makes the Arcade viable as a console. In addition to this they'd probably gain more in revenue for their Live services than they would ever lose from some few HDD sales lost. Its effectively a hardware pricecut for the proportion of the market who want some but not much download capabilities.

Perhaps not, but MS seems to like keeping hold of these things by creating proprietary products either with HW designs or middleware restrictions that prevent widespread use of 3rd party products that are capable of exactly the same functionality. Hence their steps to prevent people pulling the supplied HDD out of their proprietary HDD case and replacing it with a bigger one.

It just seems to go against MSs general philosophy of wanting to stay in control of HW to allow for [potentialy] unlimited external HDD memory through anything other than a proprietary MS HDD. For people wanting to get better functionality on their Arcade giving them freedom up to 32Gig is all they need. After that it's consistent with the MS modus operandi to put proprietary controls on their customers. MS and retailers should be able to convince most people to buy one proprietary MS 120 or 250 HDD than multiple 16gig  3rd party devices.

And a profitable revenue stream is a profitable revenue stream. Why hand any profits over to other companies if you can keep them to yourself?

No, the reason is because they want to protect the margin/profitability of their Elite SKU. If anyone could simply add a HDD to an Arcade they wouldn't be able to sell the higher profit Xbox 360 Elites and to allow their loss lead SKU to be more financially viable at a lower price point. However now they are under more pricing pressure they have relented somewhat for the Arcade SKU to allow it to have an external USB drive attached and it also allows them to remove the card readers from the slim SKU and save money on every unit produced. HDD sizes are an area of greatly diminishing returns and there are simply very few people who would want to put a larger than 120GB HDD into their console.

Tease.

I really doubt that MS is going to completely lift the limit on USB drive size so soon after granting users the use of such a function.  Besides, it would seriously cripple their HDD extortion business. A slim seems likely, but no HDD ? Why not include a slimmed down $10 20GB HDD ?  Makes little sense to me.  Just my opinion though, and I'm no corporate big wig.

Seriously, how many of these things has he made accurately?

Over the last few months there has been a number of announcements that has got me thinking.

M$ have brought in the USB device connection. Along with this is a more defined robust data transfer system to transfer all info you have for games, saves etc on your HDD. We know also Natal will release likely in Novemeber.

This brings me to the next point, which is not yet confirmed at all by M$. But with my wondering brain believe the following scenario is exactly what M$ are gearing towards.

The Slim 360. What has that got to do with any of the afformentioned announcements?

M$ are now in a prime position to capatilise perfectly on a Slim 360. The design of a Slim would be able to do away with the existing 360 HDD completely. Currently USB devices are maxed at 30gb. I believe this is purely so the HDD's will continue to sell at this moment in time. I believe the Slim will launch with Natal, as a package. Likely with a 60gb USB device. With the release of Natal and Slim I believe M$ will lift the 30gb limit to an endless limit. 500GB USB HDD anyone?

I firmly believe USB decision was made by M$ to make a Slim transition with no HDD much easier and influential. With not having to worry about where the bulky HDD 360 would go, they could cncentrate on a sleak and visually pleasing design for a Slim.

There is little point in releasing a Slim after a 360 Natal package to. It makes perfect business sense that this new revitalised 360 in Slim form is released with the Natal package. And firmly believe that is why the USB stuff is being introduced now.

What do you guys think? E3 announcement anyone?

how are existing owners going to upgrade then? where would they put 120-250gb worth of data

how much would a 500gb or even 120gb usb run for? would it be cheaper than MS current HDDs prices? i think not they want 70$ for a little 16gb would do you think they would charge for 500gb usb?

i doubt well see over 30gb usbs this year also who would want usb thumb drives sticking out of there consoles? rather than an attached HDD that is integrated with the consoles design a usb sticking out would not make the console look sleek

i think if there is going to be a slim it will still be able to use MS current HDD

                                                                      Play Me

If the slim is indeed real i would expect them to use an internal HDD and you could use your USB drives to transfer all your data. They wont go completely flash memory

Long Live SHIO!

No, what?

It seems you're agreeing with me that MS aren't going to allow unlimited size 3rd party HDDs to be plugged in to 360s, slim or otherwise. But you disagree with my reasoning? I don't think your reasoning is incompatible with mine.

Or are you saying that if/when a 360 slim is released there will be no slim Elite so MS won't maintain a stranglehold on the high capacity HDD market and so they will allow any 3rd party into their current HDD monopoly?

I guess MS disagree that very few people want more than 120Gig in their console given they have just released 250Gig HDDs. I'm sure they haven't released 250Gig HDDs in anticipation of them not selling.
