Forums - General - Large Hadron Collider – Live!

Hi guys, the world's largest particle collider goes live this morning. I just thought I would post a link to the live updates if any of you are interested.

Link

It hasn't exactly been smooth sailing so far.

it would be awesome to see that inside of that thing.

Yay! Someone took interest.

I know, I think I would give almost anything to visit. Last year my girlfriend lived with a physics student who got to visit it. I was extremely jealous.

i have a question, what is the purpose of the hadron collider? i heard it was to discover the origin of the universe, right?

Several experiments are going on (four I believe) but the biggest purpose is probably finding the Higgs Boson which gives mass to particles. Finding it would help confirm that our current model of the universe is correct.

Noooooo, if I watch it, I might change the outcome and cause a black hole to swallow the Earth.

Don't get your hopes up. It won't be long before mysterious saboteurs from the future disable it again. We weren't meant to know! Mankind isn't ready yet!

Where did I hear that? When I read that I was like "That's not the first I've heard of that theory..." but for the life of me I can't remember where I heard it. It's positively absurd of course, but most terrible rumors surrounding the LHC are absurd.

Edit:Now I remember, Howstuffworks.com's podcast had mentioned that in their show about the LHC.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

Oh good, now I can see the black hole form before they devour my ass

EDIT: Oh nvm, thought it was a cam or something :)

Hope the techs there can type fast to let us know to put our head between our legs to kiss...

Unicorns ARE real - They are just fat, grey and called Rhinos

As Rath has already said, their primary goal is to try and find out whether the Higgs Boson exists (Kind of like a particle that gives some other particles mass). But they also want to find out a few other things such as does dark matter exist? If so what is it? Are electromagnetism, strong nuclear and weak nuclear different manifestations of the same force? Why is gravity the weakest force? What was the nature of the early Universe? Are there extra dimensions? And so on.
