Metacritic Says 4 of the 20 Best Wii Games are on WiiWare

I find that pretty impressive given how much more advertising and attention is given to retail Wii games, not to mention the larger budgets those titles have, and the the fact that WiiWare has existed since Spring 2008 while Wii has existed since 2006...

Big congratulations to the Cave Story guys though - they've made the 12th best game on Wii of all time by Metacritic - ahead of NSMB Wii, and second on WiiWare only to World of Goo. Not an easy task.

What do you think of the WiiWare scene vs. the Wii retail scene?

I'm not impressed by the top games on metacritic for wii (those rated 90+); 3 are gamecube or ps2 remakes (zelda: twilight princess, re4 wii, and okami).

then there's only mario galaxy, metroid prime 3 and SSBB that are true wii exclusives :(

wii's metacritic ratings just reinforces my opinion that the console has the weakest library of the 3 current gen consoles.

hopefully zelda wii, mario galaxy 2, and the new metroid game will give a much needed boost to the console's metacritic ratings.

I don't give a damn what metacritic thinks of the WiiWare library. That said, I have more downloaded games on my Wii than retail games... and I've got a lotta retail games.

I would say Nintendo has done the best job out of the three companies in terms of down-loadable games. The service has only been running for 2 years and we already have great classics like Icarian, World of Goo, Swords and Soldiers, the Rebirth series, Cave Story, Lostwinds series and Rage of the Gladiator.

But despite that praise I will say one thing. Wiiware games review better in general because reviewers are more accepting of quirky, unique software if it's down-loadable. So because of this they say stuff like "Oh, Punchout!! should be a Wiiware game" or "Little King's Story would work better as a Wiiware title." Reviewers for some reason just won't support retail releases of these types of games for some reason.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

The reason so many WiiWare games show up the top 20 is because of relative lack of good games worth a full retail price on the system.

Maybe I'm wrong, but far from impressive, isn't that a little pathetic? I don't mean to mock, but going by Metacritic's metascore (which I'm the first to say is lame and shitty), the Wii's 20th best game is an 86? and you say 4 of those 20 games being Wiiware is impressive? color me impressed indeed...

edit: for reference, on the PS3 list you don't find an 86 meta until number 51, for X360 you'll have to scroll down to 59, and for PS2 you'll go to 110 to find a metascore of 86.

Great for the Wiiware service. Tons of good games.

Now, we need more good retail games. Keep working on it, Nintendo.

Well when it comes to review scores I hardly ever agree so that part of it is out the window pretty fast. However, I do love many WiiWare games (Cave Story is probably My favorite one) and many Wii games (NSMB Wii favorite here)

There's plenty of games on the Wii worth buying that fall outside of the top 20. Or are you the type of person who only buys what metacritic tells you to?
