Forums - Sony - What's the point of Linux on your PS3?

Seriously, what is the point of installing a Linux OS on your PS3? In my opinion, I think its a waste of time. I purchased my PS3 to play games with the added bonus of watching Blu-ray movies. Now I don't really know the intentions of what millions of PS3 owners might have, and I guess installing Linux on the PS3 are on the minds of a few of those owners. Anyway, the feature OtherOS is being removed with the update 3.21, so I guess no more Linux on the PS3 huh. Oh well, never needed it and never cared for it.

People you don't have to protect Sony, they are not paying you. Anytime, a company does something stupid, fanboys come to their rescue. Kinda predictable if you ask me. Also Sony will probably need a new slogan, "it does everything" kinda feels wrong now.

I'd argue the guy in the thread calling people who agree with Sony, and there seems to be a general consensus based on this cirumstance among logical people that this is necessary and/or warrented, is the fanboy, and by fanboy i mean "7 year old"

As others have said "what's the point of doing X on Y?"

The point is some people want to do it. Some people would like to do it out of curiosity, some people want to do it because they have other computers doing other stuff and would like to use their PS3 for open office, firefox or whatever.

You could also ask "what's the point of having card readers?" or "what's the point of having PS2 B/C on your PS3?" It was an option (and not easily or cheaply replaced like the card readers) and now it's not, it sucks. Why does it matter what people use it for?

Hopefully they wont be taking out B/C from the older models as well, because that still wont make me buy a slim, will just piss me off :(

No one is protecting them. But seriously it was a waste of a feature, sony themselves did not even want it to start with (link and quote in the other thread about the new update) so who cares if they remove it right? What they are doing is not stupid at all. Fanboys are not coming to their rescue. Open your eyes, they are trying to prevent piracy from hurting them even more.
