Forums - PC - Crossfire Question

I am planning to purchase a Crossfire motherboard. Here is the question:

I currently have an HIS 2600 512MB XT IceQ graphics card. I intend to by an HIS HD 3870 card. Can I hook those two in crossfire mode?

Thanks!

Crossfire has just released a new feature called Crossfire X, with that you can connect new cards like the 3870 with "older" cards like your 2600. It also allows you to even use your onboard card for some light processing. I don't have a 3800 series card yet so I unfortunatly cant tell you about the ins and outs of this new feature.

Hmm, I thought the CrossfireX was for connecting up to 4 cards at the same time. I have read somewhere that you can connect different card but I am not sure if the weakest link would handicap the stronger.

 Thanks!

I've never heard about CrossfireX, but I believe Crossfire and SLI are the same in that you'd need two of the same cards to get the most out of it. However, couldn't you output to two different monitors if you wanted to instead of using Crossfire?

Yes, but you could do that from Crossfire too.

@Musouka, CrossfireX is indeed for connecting up to 4 cards  at a time but also has something called Hybrid Crossfire which atleast gives you the option to use onboard graphics for simple calculations. I'll read into it some more and get a topic started on another website with some more tech guys and some less console fanboys. Absolutely no offense to you guys, this is more a website for sales statistics and others are more specialized in hardware.
