Forums - Gaming - So, stereoscopic 3D was created in 1922...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3-D_film#Early_systems_of_stereoscopic_filmmaking_.28pre-1952.

"The earliest confirmed 3-D film shown to a paying audience was The Power of Love, which premiered at the Ambassador Hotel Theater in Los Angeles on September 27, 1922. The camera rig was a product of the film's producer, Harry K. Fairall, and cinematographer Robert F. Elder. It was projected dual-strip in the red/green anaglyph format, making it both the earliest known film that utilized dual strip projection and the earliest known film in which anaglyph glasses were used. Whether Fairall used colored filters on the projection ports or whether he used tinted prints is unknown. After a preview for exhibitors and press in New York City, the film dropped out of sight, apparently not booked by exhibitors, and is now considered lost."

Guess they didn't like it back then.

I think they were too busy in world war 1...

I don't know exactly when the war took place, and I don't feel like googling right now, but lets just assume that it was around 1922, so this post makes perfect sense.

Um... the war went from 1914-1918

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Love it. That's years before color film.

In fact, several people invented color film, and every time they'd take it to a studio to sell the tech, they got rejected. Same with sound film too. Both got held back for years and years because the studios were so dumb. Many of the early experimental sound/color/3-D films are now lost, destroyed, or partially destroyed.

And now everybody's basically frothing at the mouth over new tech.

The real revolution in gaming and film that I'm waiting for is binaural recording. A bunch of industry jerks have been holding that tech back for over a hundred years, because everybody needs to wear headphones for it to work. It's okay to make everybody in the room wear stupid glasses, but not regular headphones.

Explain this binaural recording and what this would mean for entertainment!

Explain this binaural recording and what this would mean for entertainment!

Binaural recording is just the recording of sound on 2 channels, but recorded a couple inches apart, inside fake ear canals, replicating the way the human head picks up natural stereo sound.  In real life, your skull is in between your 2 ears, blocking the travel of sound vibrations.  If you hear something from the right, there is an automatic delay for the sound to make it to your left ear (called head shadow).  We've evolved to be used to this, and with only 2 ears, you can hear if something is in front, behind, above, or below you.

Advantage: If something was recorded binaurally, you can put on headphones and hear it perfectly above, below, in front, behind, and you don't need 7 speakers or whatever.

Disadvantage: Everybody needs headphones.

You can look up some binaural stuff online and just put on some headphones to hear what it sounds like.  You don't even need really fancy headphones.  You just have to make sure each sound channel goes directly into your ear, because that's how it was recorded: directly in a fake ear.

The mics are awesome and they put them inside fake ears with a fake head between them:

What this means is that... when hearing some binaural stuff, it's like you are the fake head mic in the location it was when the sound was made.  So if they surround a head with sounds of fake dinosaurs or whatever, it will be the most perfect natural way that you would hear all the madness.

Anyone interested in binaural recording should listen to this, and make sure to wear headphones, or it won't work. Close your eyes also, for added effect:

It's amazing, really.
