Forums - Nintendo - I've succumbed to Cave Story's Charm.

I just finished playing Super Metroid (partially to get hyped for Other M). And I found myself wondering what to play. I bought Cave Story and all i have to say is WHY DON'T THEY MAKE GAMES LIKE THIS ANYMORE. Cave story is so charming, the music is spot on and even though I have only played about 2 hours through it the exposition is fantastic the combat system is great and the weapon leveling is awesome. I love this game.

The charm is great in that game =)

I wonder if it's as good as the original version?

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

The Wii version imho is better than the original. You can play the original as is, or play with tweaked music. (It's the same music, but with better quality samples). The graphics are supposed to be tweaked too but I havn't noticed. I wish they could also get this game on DSiWare (or even DS retail). I know there is a homebrew DS port but you need flashcarts (which are questionably legal) and I heard the port was poorly done; also Pixel deserves money.

Yes this game has an indescribable charm that you have to experience to understand.

I was glad to give pixel some money, One of the best $12.00 I have ever spent.

I played the whole game recently myself. And while I liked the concept and design, I found myself getting frustrated at some points. Not by the difficulty, but just by the design. Mostly because of the mechanic of losing a weapons power after being hit, while bosses and enemies become more powerful after getting weaker. In other words, you get weaker over time while enemies get more powerful over time. And if you reach a specific threshold (such as losing your power down to Lvl 1), its almost impossible to defeat enemies or bosses, causing multiple restarts.  This leads to a lot of 'trial and error' gameplay and forcing you to defeat areas or bosses by memorizing how to beat it.

In short, I found myself not having problems based on my health, but constantly fighting to keep my 'power level' up just so I could damage enemies/bosses. And some bosses, such as in the Labyrinth, would knock you down to 'lvl 2' with one hit.

I still liked the game, but it still frustrated me at times.

I think that was a good design choice, it made you not want to get hit especially in sections that you could run through when you didn't have enough health. It also makes the boss fights that much more difficult... because they have a soft timer, the more you get hit the more likely you are to fail.
