As you probably know, the Revolution was re-named to the Wii not too long before its release.

3 letters that say exactly what the console is. A Dual Screen 3D portable. Genius.
I actually think 3DS will work quite well. I also think the reason Nintendo released a name for the device with the initial announcement was to test reaction to the name. They could have announced it as Project something or simply announced they were working on a successor to the DS family that will use 3D.
I imagine 3DS being a good logo, too. Think the standard DS logo, with the two screen symbol on the left hand side (I think that's how it is). That two screen symbol could quite easily become a 3.

seeing as it's true strength hasn't been revelaed yet the name "3DS" would simply be misleading

While DS was also a tentative name and it remained like that for the final product, I don't believe the next portable will be called the 3DS.
