Fair play to Sony though, they have got some excellent games out this month.
But i think it no longer matters for them in americas, they threw everything they had at it, price cut, new model, some great exclusives, final fantasy 13 etc etc, and still could not budge from 3rd each week.
Microsofr have done practically nothing since the PS3 price cut, no real games of note. The next few months are when 360 releases a lot of its exclusives.
Tough times ahead for PS3 in americas in my opinion. |
If you look at PS3 in US it faces too big challenges:
1 - the 360 has become firmly entrenched for online games/shooters and Live is well established now. Sure, the PS3 has great exclusives, but 90% of the titles are the same on each and many people, particularly the core 360 demographic, will have friends pulling them towards 360 and Lve. While PS3 sees a good percentage split of titles like Assassin's Creed 2, etc. the split for FPS and online centric titles is very telling - these normally hugely favour the 360.
2 - the Wii has squeezed it out as the top 'general choice' console this generation - and in fact when you step back and really look at where PS2 was in the US you see that the Wii has hurt PS3 far more than 360 overall. The Wii has denied the PS3 the audience that would have easily taken it pass the 360 and has totally turned the tables on Sony from last gen. If Nintendo had remained at Gamecube levels I have no doubt a big chunk of the Wii sales would have gone to PS3 due to brand and image vs 360, but Nintendo knocked it out the park with the Wii and really cut Sony off from the broader console market they'd owned with PS1/PS2 and that has been hugely damaging, locking PS3 in with the faithful (very much a repeat of where Nintendo was before) and a tough fight with 360 where it started a long way behind with PSN and online capability.
As a result the PS3 has been severly squeezed from two directions. It's selling okay with regard to itself and it's initial price point, but I really struggle to see Sony overcoming the current market trend in US. The Wii doesn't look like falling out of favour and the 360 is dug in with its demographic so there is little room to manouver for Sony other than pump out games, try and keep price competitive and settle for the share of the market available left to them from Wii/360.
Current trends make it likely that WW PS3 will slightly edge 360 LTD - but I think US Sony is going to remain behind Wii/360 and will have to settle for keeping as much share as it can and thinking how to do better next time.
But you never know, of course. But it's looking like a huge uphill struggle now I agree.
