Forums - Sales - 3% Software difference between 360 and PS3 this year.

I don't see how this is impressive for PS3...

Sony has released MAG, White Knight Chronicles, Heavy Rain and now GoW III. And Microsoft has had no exclusives from themselves yet this year.

We will see where we are at by the end of September. Let's do a comparison after Halo: Reach, Crackdown 2, and Alan Wake are out.

Well Mass Effect 2 was kind of an exclusive...but I agree with your september comparison point.

3% - so that's a statistical tie right?

And PS3 is not a software sales for some people.

@ DirtyP: I'm not disputing what you're saying, because it must be incredibly hard to track older games, but I think it's been said often that PS3 has better legs for basically all those games (I think mainly shooters are an exception - which makes Army of Two all the weirder).

About Red Faction: I know THQ is 'selling' Metro alongside Red Faction here (buy Metro, get Red Faction), so maybe that's why it's selling better (over here at least)?

I don't get this.

You buy Metro for Xbox 360 or PC and get the PS3 version of Red Faction?

Madden is something I can't explain at all. The installbase in the US is much bigger for the Xbox 360, but this game, which is almost US only, sells better on PS3. If that is not strange enough, the preorders for Madden 11 are much higher for the PS3 version as well.

I know it is very hard to track old games with small sales, but it still doesn't make sense.

I think PS3 owners are more sport orientated.. Fifa, PES and basically all multiplatform sport games sell better on PS3

they are european centric games.

Madden, ESPN stuff sold better on 360 every year

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Dirtyp2002 its easy, just forget your 360 bias for a second.

PS3 sales better each week so there are more new users each week picking up new and old games on PS3. Piracy is big on 360, non existent on PS3. Old game are hit harder then new ones.

I think VGC does a great job, but I have a hard time to believe this. It is always hard to say something like this without getting flamed or banned, but I will give it a shot.

The main tracking services like NPD, chart-track and Media Create are not showing this shift in sales.

NPD for US only really showed that Xbox 360 sells a lot of software. Bioshock 2 just topped the charts last month for example. Chart-track reported some strong Xbox 360 sales as well. Sure MAG, FFXIII and Heavy Rain had decent to good sales on the PS3, too. Media Create for Japanese sales is easy. But except the relaunch of RE 5, Star Ocean and RoF, there was no really big PS3 game in Japan this year. And those three combined sold like 400k this year.

Looking at worldwide sales for the PS3 software (especially older and smaller games) makes me wonder.

  • GTA IV PS3 outsold Xbox 360 version 2:1 last week
  • Madden NFL 10 PS3 outsold Xbox 360 version almost 3:1 (this game is basically US only)
  • Sonics ultimate Genesis collection PS3 outsold Xbox 360 version almost 3:1
  • UFC 2009 undisputed PS3 outsold Xbox 360 version 2:1
  • Sega Allstar Racing PS3 outsold Xbox 360 version even though the Xbox 360 version has exclusive content
  • Need for Speed shift sold 11k and was not even in the charts for Xbox 360, so at least 2:1
  • Army of Two the 40th day PS3 outsold Xbox 360 almost 2:1 last week (The first one is still on the charts but only for the PS3)
  • Red Faction Guerrilla is on the charts again for PS3 only.
  • Same for CoD WaW and Dead Space.

I have no doubts that MAG, FF, Heavy Rain sold well, but I doubt that the older games sell way better on PS3 suddenly. especially with no tracking service confirming this in any way. And I doubt that Games on Demand is that big on Xbox 360 that it could eat so many retail-sales of the older games.

I have thought about that phenomenon too, that most PS3 games have these insane legs.

Personally I think it's a tracking error based on a sample that ain't representative of the whole market. It will be worked on and fixed though, ioi always keeps tweaking the tracked sample to make it represent the whole market as well as possible.

I get your point but that doesn't change the facts. The SW sales are close.

It can also be said that with a much smaller install base this reflects very well for the PS3, but you obviously missed that angle.

If no one is releasing "big" games for the x360 that's not PS3's fault.

In the end the amount of x360 hardware out there is superior to PS3's and with some big hitters coming x360's way you are very right in saying that in september and after x360 should pull ahead, but september is half a year away... let the PS3 camp enjoy themselves with this close run and then brag as much as you want in 6months.

I agree with Madden being odd. Something seems wrong with this graph (others only) unless it is being bundled in some country.

http://www.vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?reg1=America&game1=&reg2=Others&game2=Madden+NFL+10+-+PS3[33187]&reg3=Others&game3=Madden+NFL+10+-+X360[33189]&weeks=52&weekly=1

The America version of this graph looks fine, but this would explain the doubled sales. However, this was for 2 weeks only (so far)

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

It doesnt really matter, when halo reach is released theres going to be a massive chasm in software sales.

Isn't that bad itself? It's almost the 4th month but not enough good exlusives to back up their user base? I would think it's impressive for the PS3 and not so much for xbox in that point of view

Xbox had some exclusive games too h/e. ME2 and Metro are console exclusives too. THey also had some great sales with BC2. So props for that

PS3 hardware sales have been better than xbox WW almost every week now. That increasing user base plus older games are realtively cheaer to buy will help also.
