Forums - Gaming - Valkyria Chronicles best HD JRPG this gen ?

imo yes but the matter is very subjective so i have no qualms with someone thinking another game was better.

Well, it a literal sense, FFXIII is with a metascore of 83 (both PS3 & 360 btw). If we drop the "RPG" qualifier and include subgenres, then Demon's Souls is with a metascore of 89. If we drop the "J" qualifier and include RPGs developed in all regions, then Mass Effect 2 is with a metascore of 96.

i have wrote here earlier here why i didn 't put Demon 's Soul and if i had did it this Thread would have  top 1,000 replies with <Demon 's Soul is not a jrpg> even if it is and as it seems some make the same thing with valkyria which i didn 't expected

Have you played Valkyria?  Is it really a surprise people said it's not a JRPG?

Next person that calls Demon's Souls a JRPG is going to get ripped apart.

A genre has absolutely nothing to do where the game is made. End of story.

The lack of Tales of Vesperia depresses me too. Feels like if the remade version came out for the PS3 that many people would be singing a different tune.

@ Kasz216: Incorrect, the first game to use a 3rd person, free movement system was Square's Vagrant Story (released in 1998 on the PS1 and incidently had it's combat system "borrowed" 10 years later by Bethesda and incorporated into Fallout 3 as V.A.T.S). Even Parasite Eve 1 and 2 had the makings of a 3rd person freeform battle system, albiet, very much in a prototype form. This "Future Tactics" is very far from the first.

As for best HD Jrpg of this gen, I have to give it to Demon's Souls.

Vagrant Story and Valkria Chronicles aren't even remotley similiar... i've played both.  Vagrant Story is a lot like Hybrid Heavan which also came out at about the same time by Konami.

Both of those are actually real time... and not turn based.

Actually, the first game to use a 3rd person movement was Parasite Eve, in 1998. Vagrant Story was released on 2000, and it used the same system that Parasite Eve created, not the other way around.

All of these cases are "real time" however.

Valkyria is turnbased and squad based.
