Battalion Wars is a JRPG?

You're missing my point.  Battalion Wars isn't even good, in my opinion.  I also don't consider it an RPG at all.  Just like I don't consider Valkyria Chronicles an RPG.

I don't actually consider Valkyria Chronicles a JRPG either - similarly to Fire Emblem, but even further removed - but I don't think that the question of genre is really what's being taled about here. It's an SRPG, or something like it, and I think what the OP means to ask is "is VC the best HD RPG to come out of Japan this gen"? He's comparing it to SRPGs, JRPGs, and also Demon's Souls. The title of the thread is just a misnomer.

Too late now. I already made a thread.  Soon, the mystery of whether VC is an RPG, Third Person Shooter, Strategy Warfare Game, or Dating Sim will be solved.

Strategy RPG.   It's a Strategy RPG.  It's not even the first game to use a third person free movement system.  That would be Future Tactics...

why don't we call the turn based RPG's and non TB RPG's

i love turn based games,almost anything can be strategy or rpg as far as i can tell,but i'm more interested when it's turn based or like dragon age rather than the oblivion/fall out style

Well, it a literal sense, FFXIII is with a metascore of 83 (both PS3 & 360 btw). If we drop the "RPG" qualifier and include subgenres, then Demon's Souls is with a metascore of 89. If we drop the "J" qualifier and include RPGs developed in all regions, then Mass Effect 2 is with a metascore of 96.
