We've all heard 'mature' games don't sell on the Wii. It's not a hardcore system. But that didn't stop some companies from trying, with varying degrees of success. Nintendo always held firm that graphics don't really matter, that we've reached a point where they look good enough. I agree with them (Hell, look at the sales. The graphics whores are in the minority) problem was we got games that looked worse than the previous gen. But that's another debate for another time.
Later this year we'll get Move and Natal. Move is a direct competitor to the Wii. I think Natal will carve out it's own niche (And not a hardcore one, but we'll see) so after the other two get their motion sensing ducks in a row, what happens to Wii? Will there be any reason to release any sort of hardcore game, with motion controls, on the Wii when the belief is it'll sell better on PS3 or 360?
The Wii does have an advantage, rather large one as a matter of fact. The Wii, has motion sensing controls right out of the box. You own a Wii, you own a Wii remote. This will not be so with the other two systems. So how many tried and true franchises will have exclusive motion controls on the other two systems? I'm thinking none. To be safe, all major game franchises that will incorporate these new controls, will also allow for traditional controls as well.
So, this leaves us with new IP's. But even then, we still have the problem of people having to buy Move or Natal to play said games. So how many of these games will be in existence? Not many. Developers for these two systems will have history on their side. They'll know what works, what doesn't, from what sold on the Wii. Which means Move and Natal may become little more than test beds for the most simplistic of games until the attach rate increases.
So then we have oversaturation of the same games, with the same controls. The very reason Nintendo said they had to innovate. I'm sure being dead last for two generations had nothing to do with it ...
So while Wii has a very enviable position of having every system, with the remote out of the box, there is still a real threat that support will be pulled from the Wii. And any hardcore game, from here on out, will not be motion control only. Which would then mean all motion control games will be for the casual user. Which over time will become a niche group itself. Instead of a major driving force it is now. More core games with less motion control, means more hardcore gamers shunning the whole thing.
I guess we'll see what happens, but if Natal and PS3 don't release 'core' games with motion control only, and support for Wii is reduced to "Wii this and Wii that" does it mean motion controls are dead?
Hmm. Maybe Wii was a fad.
