Forums - Sony - Future of PSP

I see Sony announcing the PSP 2 at this years E3. It will take cues from the Go platform. Mainly focused on DD instead of a UMD based medium, but will still have something to allow transfers to Digital.

It won't release til 2 years after the announcement. As I see Sony wanting to milk the current strategy for a little more.

At the same conference, Sony will announce a revision to the current PSP Go, but it won't launch until a year after the announcement and it will be more of a "starter pack" for the successor a year later.

Thoughts?

I honestly think we are not going to see a PSP2 for a while. Seems like, to me, they are going to release a PSPhone and/or Tablet that play PSP games, so they won't push a PSP2 for a couple of years.
Also I think they are going to announce the end of PSP 3000 this E3, dropping the price to clear the stock and sell only PSP Go with a new hardware modification (this time with a built-in camera) and with price cut! Maybe two models of PSP Go (16gb and 32gb) with different prices, but both with camera.

It would be dumb to announce it two years in advance.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

My question is this, from the press and some of the postings on these threads, many feel the PSP has been a utter failure. I don't think that is the case at all.

i also dont think they will announce it this year...okay PSP doing horrible in the states and so so in Europe but in Japan PSP is shining + sooo much promising titles in the future like Resident Evil PSP,Metal Gear Peace Walker,FF Agito,Monster Hunter 3 and and...

I'm not saying the PSP is a failure, but I think Sony needs to take steps toward the successor.

The current platform is pretty much dead outside of the Japanese market.

Also Grimes. It's not un heard of for a platform to be announced two years before release.

I personally see the idea of "MOBILE" market already too full. Let's be honest here, How many of us play our PSP/DS outside vs inside? Iphone games are consuming a lot of my times now, cheap, simple mindless games are the way sometimes.

I want a PSPgo Phone. That's all.

a PSP2 will only cost a lot of money to produce games on, and it will be hard to sell.

Soriku (Feb 10/08): In 5 years the PS3/360 will be dead.

Letsdance: FFXIII (PS3+360) first week in NA = 286K
According to pre-order rate in week 13 (post id: 2902544)

My PSP2 wishlist:

1) DD only (I love my PSP Go, digital distribution is the way to go for handhelds)
2) Second analog stick (please for the love of god! this is absolute must)
3) higher resolution display (WVGA+)
4) Stronger hardware (PS2 emulation)
5) Backwards compatibility

I don't care for PSP phone, since I need windows mobile enabled phone. But I don't think we'll se announcement this E3.

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

The psp is not a failure considering it has sold more than the ps3 and the 360. I see them making a psp2 as well but not anytime soon.

If Sony focuses more on the DD side then I don't see how it would cost more than the UMD strategy.

While they will have a stronger platform to develop for, they won't have the added "bulk" of cases, manuals and discs.

And Sony would have to put some major muscle behind a cell phone to make it compare to PSP graphics and gameplay. So the cell phone would end up costing a lot too.

Not to forget that it would take a strong marketing campaign to make it stand out next to the Droid and iphone.
