Forums - Sony Discussion - Is the JRPG/FF run over?

There are several things that need to be said.

1. The game did not bomb. I just didn't live up to your wild sales expectations. "10 million seller" "the next FFVII" etc...

2. If Final Fantasy wants to have a better reception then it needs to innovate in several areas. One of the main things it needs is a credible storyline. Basically the story of nearly ever Final Fantasy game is "spiky-haired emo youth with big sword saves the world". Look at Mass Effect, it was epic sci-fi space opera which something new and fresh (at least in video games).

As a person who has beat both Mass Effects I would say that it isn't the best example ot use. The story in both of them is incredibly simple.

Dude, you could NOT have said a WORSE thing at the end of your post.

OT: No.

He says, after having played neither.

OT:

Nah, not really. Keep in mind, the genre is a lot older than the PS2 and has staying power out the wazoo. FF's popularity might be waning, but Pokemon is goingn strong an Dragon Quest is actually getting more popular with time.

Also, you might be able to draw some kind of link between FF sales performance and the fact that it is the first Final Fantasy not on a first-place console.  So even believing that FF is waning based on Japanese XIII sales seems a bit myopic.

JRPG sales have nothing to do with not being on a first place comsole. It has everything to do with the quality of the launch JRPG's and the major focus Sony has on the western audience.

Also good points!  You can't totally dismiss the possibility of what I said also being a factor in the big picture, though.  Especially when it seems like a pretty obvious explanation...  Not without some proof, anyway.

I do absolutely agree though that Sony shifting its focus to compete with Microsoft and the Western audience for a certain type of gamer has hurt JRPGs compared to last generation.  It seems like Nintendo is picking up some of the slack for the genre though, which is surprising and great.  (Really looking forward to all the new IPs they've got coming.)

This. Xenoblade will be the greatest jrpg this generation has seen.

What's wrong with a simple story? The story in Mass Effect isn't original but it is executed very well without the use of cutscenes that last way too long and doesn't have giant plotholes :/

Wrong. FFXIII did have the critical reception of the other FF games because of its linearity. If you actually read the reviews instead of just look at the score, they are all saying that FFXIII is a fantastic game. One reviewer said that FFXIII had one of the best stories in a game, one of the best battle systems ever in a jrpg, memorable characters, fantasic graphics and wonderful music but still gave it a 7 because it was too linear. Many reviews have been like that.

I love FFXIII but there is a reason why I like the characters in ME better. I hate those fucking emo kids like Hope and I also hate that how a characters appereance in JRPGs already gives away how that person will act.

Other then that FFXIII is awesome!
