Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft: Xbox doesn't need Blu-Ray

Did they follow the psp go?

LOL, you can't use Sony's implementation of an idea as a way to measure its possible success, just look at the epic failure of the Sixaxis and Nintendo's runaway success with the Wii Remote.

Capcom never said anything about the DVD size.

In fact they were ambigious, and could have been referring to the slow read times of the PS3's Blu-Ray drive.

I agree DD as the primary means of entertainment distribution is inevitable. But not for a while yet. And I would be extremely surprised if NextBox didn't come with a Blu-ray (or equivalent) drive. One thing's for sure though, it won't be DVD.

100mbs internet speed as standard with no data caps, at an affordable price, throughout the world is when DD will really get going. And that's not likely to be in time for the next gen.

The next box may easily be an upgrade of existing Xbox 360 hardware, Wii style.

Wow, hello 3 years ago. Didn't MS say that Digital Distribution would be the main form of getting game in about 18 months, like 36 months ago?

No, they did not say this.  I don't think they ever even began speaking about DD until last year.

Wrong again, http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/03/14/microsoft-predicts-blu-ray-irrelevance-in-12-18-months/

Though it was only 2 years ago, not 3. They've still missed their mark, and it doesn't look like DD will be taking over any time soon.

Not really.  They never said DD would be the main form of getting a game.  In fact the 12-18 month thing is purely related to when he thought the decline in Blu-Ray would be.  That DD discussion was focused on HD video content and such, not games.

"Going forwards, digital downloads is really where it's at," Lewis told GamesIndustry.biz. Xbox Live Video Marketplace currently supplies downloadable HD rentals of movies and television shows. Sony's PS3 does not currently feature a similar service.

"Before very long we will look back wistfully at shiny discs as something that was somewhat a historic phenomenon in a way that we kind of think about vinyl or VCRs today," Lewis stated. While the Microsoft-backed HD DVD format has "died" in the next generation format wars, Lewis believes that Blu-ray will follow the same fate. When will digital distribution take dominance? "I think that's going to be the case in the next 12-18 months."

Not one mention of games via DD.

Yea, but look at your original reply. MS was definately thinking about DD a long time ago. And if they are talking about discs being a thing of the past, where will games come from? Just because he didn't lay it out for you, doesn't mean they were not thinking about DD of games at all.

Ah, I see.  Yes I meant games DD, obviously.  And I realize this, but the article most definitely does not prove your original comment by any means.  That's all I'm saying.  They were talking about DD for movies and stuff long before they began talking about it for games as well.

dont know about all this disc spinning, but even when net connections are at light speed, i rather own something physical than have it on a hard drive :S i like my collections which i can take with me everywhere and I can swap and borrow.

If DD ever goes full stream to the extent that it wipes out discs, the 2nd hand market will die, we wont be able to share games and films with friends and family. i hate to see this happen :(

While I agree that digital storage is the way of the future, I disagree that DVD is the way to be at present. Bluray would be a nice interim solution to the evident storage problems game discs are starting to have on the 360.

How would you tell if the disc spins? The 360 sounds like a hair dry in 'low' compared to the way quieter PS3 and Wii.

My 360 when the disc drive isn't spinning is dead quiet.  Not sure where you heard this?  The 360 is pretty much only loud when the disc drive is spinning.  So yeah that should answer your question too.

Ok then so if in future the X360 or the next XBox has Blu Ray, I'm just going to laugh at MS the whole time coz of their lies.
