Nintendo renders Sony’s progress irrelevant
Once upon a time video games were seen as toys for kids. The Nintendo Entertainment System was all the rage, but if you happened to be older than twelve years you didn’t want to be seen playing the console.

Kids love colorful games with funny characters.
It was Sega who stepped up to make gaming more appealing to older audiences, but they ultimately failed because their flagship title was a kiddie game as well.

Sonic sure has a lot of friends.
This is when Sony entered the stage and continuously pushed for more mature games to make video games more acceptable to the mainstream. The final result of their efforts is nothing short of amazing.

God of War deals with mature themes like violence and sex.
Microsoft deserves to be mentioned too, because just like Sony, they also made big strides towards gaming for grown-ups. The Halo franchise single-handedly established the Windows company as a major player in the video game market.

Master Chief is the face of mature gaming despite never showing his own.
But in the end we have to mostly thank Sony for making video games more accepted by the mainstream. It was the PlayStations who moved gaming forward and out of the children’s bedrooms into the living room. Consoles aren’t toys anymore, they have become the center of entertainment and nowadays offer much more than just the ability to play video games. Blu-ray, Home, Netflix, just to name a few examples.
Everything would be good and fine if it weren’t for Nintendo, the Wii and the DS. For more than a decade Sony worked hard to change the perception of gaming from a kid’s toy to an acceptable form of entertainment for grown-ups, but Nintendo catapulted us straight back into the stone age of video games.

Is this the new face of gaming? I hope not.
In order to be taken serious as an entertainment form by the mainstream, games need deep storylines. Not games like Wii Sports that completely lack any sort of narrative. Gaming will never catch the attention of adults with titles like Wii Fit or Brain Training.
